Daredevil: Into the Ring

Marvels Original Netflix series Daredevil

Daredevil, Marvel’s newest series available on Netflix, made its worldwide premiere on April 10.  All thirteen episodes were made available for either the viewer to binge watch or take their time.  At first, I was going to try the binge watching, but then I thought, why.  I’ve been looking forward to this series for months and now that I have it available to me, I want to take my time and enjoy it.

Synopsis:

Follow the journey of attorney Matt Murdock, who in a tragic accident was blinded as a boy but imbued with extraordinary senses. Murdock sets up practice in his old neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, New York where he now fights against injustice as a respected lawyer by day and masked vigilante at night.

Episode One: “Into The Ring”

We start the episode out with a young Murdock laying in the middle of the street, surrounded by knocked over chemical barrels that are spilling into the streets.  Just as his father, Jack Murdock, comes on scene, it is finally known that the chemicals have reached his eyes and he can’t see.

Flash to the present, and we now have an older Murdock (Charlie Cox) inside the confessional.  He can’t bring himself to confess his sins, but only ask for forgiveness for the sins he was going to make.  As he walks out of the confessional, we are brought to the docks, where there is a kidnapping attempt in the making.  And now, the masked vigilante comes to the rescue.

These scenes are brutal and violent, but oh so good.  I sat in awe as the opening credits came on.  I was not expecting it to be this good this soon.

Now back to the show!

We are then introduced to some of the other important characters in the series.  First up is Murdock’s law partner and friend Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson).  We first see him walking the streets of Hell’s Kitchen in search of his police officer friend.  Is he bribing to get the good cases that the cops bring into the station?  Seems so.

The duo haven’t been able to get a client yet.  That is until Nelson’s cop friend calls them with a potential homicide suspect.  This is when we are introduced to Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), where she is found in her apartment, covered in blood, with a dead body and a murder weapon in her hand.

While Murdock and Nelson are questioning her at the station to get her side of the story, we also see that there are suspicious things going on around them.  Page has been arrested for the murder, but has yet to be charged.  This scene is where we are also introduced to Murdock’s enhanced senses.  Just by listening to Page speak, and the sound of her heartbeat, he knows she is telling the truth about not murdering Dr. Fisher, but what is she hiding?

So, after questioning and Page is still in a jail cell, we then see a cop that is being threatened if he doesn’t do “something”.  Next scene, same cop is then trying to strangle Page in her cell.  After a 5 second fight, where page gets the upper hand, we are then brought back to the interrogation room.  Page is being released, but we still don’t know why she wasn’t charged in the first place.

Knowing that something is definitely up with this arrest, Murdock takes Page back to his apartment for her protection.  They chat about what happened to get her into the situation she is in, but she is still holding back.  When she thinks that Murdock is asleep, she slips out to go back to her apartment.  There, she is trying to retrieve the evidence that is she has against her employer.  However, in creeps the bad guy that was waiting for her to show up.  They scuffle, she gets thrown into a wall.

But wait, the masked vigilante, aka Murdock, is coming to the rescue.  The intruder however is the one that brought the knife to the fight.  They go at each other and the next thing you know, they are crashing out the window. After a few moments where neither are moving, the fight starts again.  This time Murdock get the upper hand, chains the intruder up and gets the evidence back.

Page, not knowing what to do, lets Murdock leave with the evidence.  Which he then brings to the papers to expose what Page was trying to hide to begin with.

End

I wasn’t knowing what to expect from the first episode, but it was amazing.  I was in awe of what Marvel and Netflix did.  I’m hoping the rest of the episodes are just as jam-packed with excitement as the first.

We still have yet to be introduced to Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio).

So, for now, it’s onto the next episode!!
