Another week goes by, another mutant is added to X-Men: Apocalypse cast, it’s getting bigger and bigger every day. Bryan Singer’s followup to last year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past is currently shooting in Montreal and every few days he shares a little something from the production, whether it be a major reveal, a casting announcement or a simple behind-the-scenes photo.
His latest Apocalypse tease is a bit of all of these things, confirming that another important mutant character from Marvel Comics is set to appear in the next X-Men ensemble – one who just so happens to share an important connection to the film’s titular villain.
Singer’s Instagram account showcases him and the crew of Apocalypse shooting a sequence. Caliban isn’t pictured but you can check out his underground home in what he describes as “Caliban’s place of ‘business’.”
For comic readers, what should immediately come to mind are the Morlocks – mutants who live in hiding, forming an underground community. In fact, there’s another Morlock (Gina Carino’s Angel Dust) set to be introduced next year in Deadpool, as well.
The Morlocks first appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand, where their leader Callisto (Dania Ramirez) was written to also have the mutant-locator powers of Caliban. Now, presumably in the 1983 setting of X-Men: Apocalypse, the real Caliban will finally be introduced. As for what his “business” is, we can only assume that might have to do with his ability to locate other mutants – something Apocalypse may be after (the X-Men have Charles Xavier’s Cerebro which serves the same function).
X-Men: Apocalypse is expected to be released on May 27, 2016.
