Jack rubbed the back of his neck. “Right. Well, if you’re determined to do this, Veronica has the guest room all set up for you in the apartment until you leave for the chalet near Scranton at the end of the week. Do you have everything you’ll need?”

“I have to pick up ski equipment, but the rest is in the truck Tim provided. By the way, what did your operative have to say about all this?”

Greg watched the color seep into Jack’s face. Obviously, the mighty Livy wasn’t as happy with the situation as Veronica had said she’d be. He frowned.

“Nothing yet, but she’ll be fine. Don’t worry. You’ll meet her shortly. We’ve got a great cover story established for you both.”

Greg gawked, and fought not to lose his temper. Something in Jack’s voice told him things were definitely not fine. “She doesn’t know yet, does she?” His voice conveyed his irritation. “It’s too late to back out now and come up with another plan.”

Jack ran his hand through his hair, disarranging it. Greg could see the man was worried, and it didn’t calm his own unsettled nerves. Lord, this has to work.

“I know. Believe me, I know.” Jack’s frustration was evident. “I expected her early yesterday, but her plane was delayed because of bad weather. I couldn’t speak to her about this over the airport phone. Veronica’s convinced we have nothing to worry about. She says she won’t let us down, and since my wife knows her better than anyone, I’ll have to take her word for it. Livy’s been after me for assignments with more meat to them, and she won’t find anything more exciting than this cloak and dagger business. That’s what’s bothering me. Not only am I convinced this plan is full of holes, not knowing who’s behind the threats makes it almost impossible to eliminate them. You’re still convinced it’s personal and not political?”

“I am, and the note proves it. For what it’s worth, you don’t have to worry about me. I’ll play my part. Marrying a stranger is the last thing I want, but I’ll do what I must for my daughter. Let’s hope your woman is as good as you say she is and as agreeable as Veronica believes.”

We asked Susanne Matthews what the top ten places she’d like to visit are. She provided us with some great answers — and visuals to boot! Here’s what Susanne had to say:

10. Australia and New Zealand:

Koala-australian-animals-33682512-1280-1024

Quite frankly, there’s no place on earth like them. They have animals,. Insects, and plants found nowhere else. I’ve been doing quite a bit of research on Australia recently and the more I learn the more I’d love to be able to go there. It can be a dangerous place to be sure, with lots of BIG spiders and snakes, but I think seeing koala bears and kangaroos in the wild would be awesome.

9. Egypt:

sphinx-Egypt-sphinx-shi-3aa47

I want to see the Pyramids and the Sphinx

What can I say? I’ve always been fascinated by the giant structures built long before man had the tools and equipment we have today, and the fact that these monuments have survived for thousands of years when stuff we build is gone within a few generations says something about their skill.

8. Greece:

The_Acropolis_Hill

I’d love to see Athens and the Acropolis and the Parthenon as well as other ruins left from the classical era. My grandchildren are one quarter Greek, so it would be interesting to show them pictures of their father’s family ancestral home.

7. Italy:

rome

Specifically, I’d like to see Rome, Vatican City, Venice, Milan, and of course Pompeii

Again, the ruins of civilization fascinate me, but so do the works of art by such masters as Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Bracci. I’d like to see the ruins of Pompeii after Vesuvius blew its top. Finally, I’d want to ride in a gondola in Venice. If I had time, I’d add a trip to see the Blue Grotto at Capri.

6. France:

Eiffel-tower-paris

Since my ancestry is French, with my oldest ancestor leaving France for Canada in 1663. I’d love to visit all of the country, especially the Breton regions, but also Paris. I’d like to spend time in the memorial cemeteries dedicated to the Canadian soldiers who died there, too.

5. Scotland:

castle-of-mey-scotland-entrance-a

My husband’s grandparents came to Canada from Scotland in the early twentieth century, making him only second generation Canadian. From them, I learned to appreciate the richness of a Celtic heritage, something I tried to show in my novel.

4. England:

Stonehenge_-_England

Specifically London, Stonehenge, and Stratford upon Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace. As an English teacher, I enjoyed reading his plays and poems, and seeing where he lived would be cool. I have a William Shakespeare action figure. How nerdy is that?

3. The Grand Canyon:

grand-canyon

In Canada we have an area around Drumheller Alberta where experts find some of the best dinosaur fossils in the world. When we went out west fifteen years ago, I was amazed to see a miniature version of the Grand Canyon along the way with hoodoos and the colored limestone. I’ve used online images to describe the canyon in one of my books, but I’d love to see it for myself.

2. Norway and Denmark:

Carte_postale_Oslo

My eldest granddaughter lives in Oslo and it’s my intention to go and see her in 2016. Back in 1004, we visited the family who were living in Stockholm, Sweden at the time, an incredible place to visit. They call it the Venice of the north since it’s built on islands separated by waterways. We saw the royal palace, slightly smaller than Buckingham, but just as ornate, and we managed to get out to a real Viking village, Birka. We flew to Helsinki, Finland and took an overnight Baltic cruise to get to Stockholm. This time, I hope to see the other two Scandinavian countries. Copenhagen is just a ferry ride away from southern Norway, but I hop-e to take a train ride north to Bergen as well.

1. Alaska and the Inside Passage:

CEL_ML_Hubbard008R

This dream will become a reality in a matter of weeks. For my 65th birthday, my husband is taking me on an Alaskan cruise. We fly into Anchorage, where we spend a day, and then pick up the ship in Seward. We’ve signed up for a variety of off-ship excursions—safe ones for people our age—including a train ride into the Yukon, one of Canada’s three territories. This is the ship I’ll sail on. Check my blog near the end of the summer and you’ll see the pictures I’ll take.
