MacGyver Season 1, episode 14: “Fish Scaler”

Matilda “Matty” Webber.
The name strikes fear into the most hardened ex CIA agent. Well, maybe just Jack, and most likely because it’s his fault.
It’s evaluation time at Phoenix, and Matty(call her Matty, her father was Director Webber[that’s a joke]).
Riley’s new facial recognition software has found a criminal named Bishop wanted by the FBI for the murder of an FBI agent named Eva in the most unusual of places-a viral video background. MacGyver and Jack go to question the “star” of the video, Eileen, and she wants nothing to do with Hollywood types like them, giving them the perfect cover. However, she wants everything to do with Bishop. Jack preens at the thought of being mistaken for a Hollywood agent, while Mac does something useful; he uses the sketches left by Bishop for Eileen to triangulate his location.
At the apartment, the duo have just missed him, and have a run in with the FBI.
Using his ingenuity while they are locked in the car, they steal the vehicle and Mac makes their escape, using clues he found in the apartment, they find Bishop at the bus station.
Matty, it should be noted, does not jump when the FBI snaps it’s fingers. She doesn’t even flinch.
Matty knows someone in the FBI is dirty, and using what I call a reverse X-Files maneuver, trusts almost no one there.
Mac begs Jack to tell him what happened between him and Matty, he won’t tell. So it’s definitely Jack’s fault.
When they catch Bishop, he reveals a shocking twist: he doesn’t have someone in the FBI, someone in the FBI has him. He is being blackmailed by someone he doesn’t know, and has been framed for the murder of Eva.
They escape just in time from the FBI, and take Bishop to a safe location.
It’s time for Riley’s evaluation, and she finds that Matty knows more than Phoenix does about her. She is worried about her future because of her past, but Matty gets to the heart of things. Matty wants her there, but on a provisional basis.
Meanwhile, we find Mac, Jack, and Bishop at a hotel, and Jack provides them with dinner from the vending machine, and a bunch of MacGyver made security systems.
Bishop does not like the Gooey Pies he is buying in the viral video.
Bishop tells the boys that he does have a crush on Eileen, but won’t act on it, because of the trouble he is in, and only buys Gooey Pies to see her.
Riley and Matty have been busy working together, and back up everything Bishop has said. Now they have to find the dirty fed.
The FBI has found them, and using a hotel Bible in a way that has to be seen, escape yet again.
They stole another car, but not a federal car, which they hope will make points with Matty. It does not.
Matty says they have the dirty agent in custody, and to bring Bishop in.
Do not ask Matty for cookies.
Bozer calls Matty out, questioning how she selected the dirty agent. He may not know much about federal(and secret) agencies, but he does know his stuff about co-workers cheating to get ahead.
He is right, and the agent comes for Bishop.
Jack does not flinch at the gun pointed at them, and Mac has time to cause a light to blowout, which lets Jack do what he does best.
Bishop is finally free-relatively speaking-to call Eileen and ask her out. It’ll be a prison date.
Bozer is finishing his evaluation when Mac and Jack arrive. It went well. Probably because Bozer is adorable.
We do find out that what happened between Matty and Jack happened in Chechnya.
Now it is time for Mac’s evaluation.
She doesn’t understand MacGyver’s methods, and it worries her. She wants to keep him alive, she cares. But she mistakenly thinks Mac is lucky. He disagrees and she tells him to prove her wrong.
He accepts the challenge.
I. Love. Matty.
She has immediately gelled with the rest of the team/actors, and using evaluations is a clever way to provide exposition.
Just don’t cross her. She’ll feed you cookies.
MacGyver airs Fridays at 8 on CBS.
