Wynonna Earp-“Gonna Getcha Good” does what it says.

Caution: Some Wynonna Earp spoilers ahead!

  • Are we surprised Waverly was a cheerleader? No, we are not.

In episode 3 of Wynonna Earp, “Gonna Getcha Good”, Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) still fits into her cheerleading uniform, and shows Officer Haught(Katherine Barrell) a cheer. Apparently the cheerleader fantasy is not biased, and is a thing in all types of relationships.
Wynonna(Melanie Scrofano) bursts in and gives us a little TMI as to what is not under Waverly’s  uniform.

Death and a Donut

There was a death at Purgatory High, right in front of the trophy case. This is even more inconvenient, as there is a high school reunion in town. It is the 10th anniversary of a major hockey championship, and the heroes have returned home. One of them is missing a major organ, and is dead in front of the trophy case, but home just the same.

Wynonna smells the stink of demon all over the body, and goes undercover to get more information.
The Waverly that is slightly more than Waverly in a bad way causes trouble for Officer girlfriend Haught with a PDA that is caught on film. The über creepy rich kid Tucker Gardner(Caleb-Ellsworth-Clark) caught the kiss, and Haught arrests him.

Note to Haught: don’t arrest the rich kids; it gets you desk duty.
Wynonna, being Wynonna, gets a date while undercover with hockey homecomer Perry(Patrick Kwok-Choon).
But is Perry a good guy? The flayed rabbit he is bleeding into a bowl later points to “no”.

What About Doc?

Meanwhile, we find out Doc’s(Tim Rozon) need for the bar, and it involves Dolls and very smart Rosita(Tamara Duarte).

Perry admits how the championship had been won ten years earlier, and the reason is a genie type creature called Marzanoik. It granted the coach’s(and team member’s) wishes, but exacts a horrible price after 10 years. Perry wasn’t the bad guy(sorry, Perry!), he had taught himself spells to try and protect everyone.

The monster comes for his literal pound of flesh, and we get to see how brave Haught really is.
Wynonna and company best the thing, even after the offer of wishes being granted.

This is an echo of last week’s heart to heart between the Earp sisters, Haught tells Wynonna that Waverly isn’t quite herself, and Wynonna doesn’t see it.
But a suffering Dolls does, thank God, and this sets up the next episode, right before a terrifying end scene.

Thoughts:

Definitely a 4/5 stars episode. The baddie-the Marzanoik-is creepy af. He isn’t your typical genie with a turban, he looks like something out of the Jeepers Creepers fandom, if they needed another scarecrow.

Caleb Ellsworth-Clark as slimy Tucker Gardner is perfect. His tone of voice, his body language, everything.

There are a couple of neat callbacks to last week. The aforementioned heart to hearts, and last week, Doc had the opportunity to get more than the bar from Black Badge. This week, Wynonna was offered wishes, her heart’s desire. As per their characters, both deny the easy way out.

Rosita and Wynonna’s exchange was hilarious, Bechdel test passing or not.

Waverly’s demon side is ramping up the creepy. Proof that Dominique can tackle any turn Waverly may take in future episodes.

Next week looks to be an important episode for the series; hope you’ll be there with us as we live tweet!

Wynonna Earp airs Fridays at 10:00 on SyFy.
