Theo Tuesday – Backstabbing For Beginners

Backstabbing For Beginners is the title of the project Theo James is working on at the moment, so what do we know? Well the answer is not a lot at present.

The movie is based on a 2010 memoir by Michael Soussan about his experiences when he began working for the UN’s Oil for Food program.

The blurb on the back cover of the book (full title Backstabbing For Beginners: My Crash Course in International Diplomacy) runs as follows:

The year is 1997. Michael Soussan, an idealistic young graduate, has recently accepted his dream job at the United Nations’ Oil-For-Food Program, helping Iraqi civilians survive the impact of economic sanctions. Under conflicting guidance, he would help to oversee the use of 64 billion petrodollars against a backdrop of simmering international tension that constantly threatens to erupt into an all-out war.

An absolute beginner in the world of international diplomacy, Soussan finds himself embroiled in a world of spies, corrupt oil tycoons, and dysfunctional diplomats. Backstabbing for Beginners is at once an unsettling tale of one man’s political coming of age, and a stinging indictment of the hypocrisy that prevailed at the heart of the United Nations.

It’s not another dystopian YA franchise, or even a dystopian vampire one. This is a political thriller, a different animal entirely for Theo who stars alongside Sir Ben Kinglsey and Jacqueline Bisset. The lead role of Michael was originally going to be played by another YA franchise heart-throb, Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) but he dropped out over safety concerns regarding some of the movie’s planned locations. That’s good news for us because Theo stepped up and took the lead. Ben Kingsley plays an older diplomat, the boss of Theo’s character. It may sound pretty dry, but one thing is certain, as the main character, the one whose book this movie is based on, there’s going to be a LOT of Theo!

So far the movie has filmed in Copenhagen, Morocco and just finished a stint in Toronto, Canada. We’ve seen some really great pics of Theo surface in the last few weeks like this one, taken on set in Toronto, where I swear he is channelling Walter Clark again!

Including some great fan encounters too.

I swear this is the first time I’ve ever been jealous of a dog (a dog who now has an instagram account @oceansden if you want to follow)

Hopefully more info will surface about the movie in due course, but hopefully this will keep you going for now. Until next week THEOlogians!
