The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace “Smoke” Review

The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace “Smoke” is the sixth episode of the Idaten anime. Following on from the revelations and speculations in episode 5. Ysley finally confirms the Demon Lord’s true nature. The Idaten youngsters train alongside their new friends. And Brandy discovers a side to herself she never knew she had.

Plot

The episode opens with Ysley and Prontea discussing the seal the demons are in. Prontea made a scale replica filled with cockroaches to demonstrate. Ysley quickly destroys it though to show Prontea how his hypothesis works. Basically the demons are dead, just like the cockroaches that fall out of the model. They would die of starvation but it’s not something Rin or the other Idaten thought of at the time 800 years ago. Ysley confirms that Paula wasn’t too far off the mark. The professor is some sort of Idaten. Made because of the demons desperation to save their own species and years of turmoil for them. He is remotely controlling his consciousness from where he is in the seal using mind manipulation. His intelligence comes from the Idaten stored with him. However his memories are all over the place and even he isn’t sure of his true nature.

After all this is confirmed the Idaten youngsters go training. Prontea goes to teach them how to increase and decrease their weight at will in order to hit harder. Paula is a natural at becoming lighter but not heavier. But Hayato can’t do it in theory on the scale at all. When put into practise though, he nails it. Though he does slow down and become an easy target. But it soon becomes obvious to Prontea and Ysley that Hayato has been accidentally adjusting his weight without knowing it all this time.

Meanwhile Brandy sends her kids away from the area to safety. Seeing how things are getting serious. She tells them all to take one person they can trust with them and get out as fast as possible. Showing a motherly love even she didn’t know she had.

The episode ends with Ysley and Paula crashing the meeting of an extremist religious sect.

Review

Whilst I always knew Hayato would become the star at some point, I love the way this has been handled. Yeah he’s powerful but he’s not unstoppable because he’s flawed and needs to learn to be more observational. The underlying theme has always been there of the Idaten being less than human because they’re emotionless and the demons being more human. It’s interesting that the desperate prayers of humans is what manifests Idaten when they couldn’t possibly understand those emotions. Are the people praying to the right gods? I feel like this is going to be touched on more especially with the existence of hybrids like Miku.

This was a thoroughly entertaining episode. Seeing Hayato finally reach higher than where he was is immensely satisfying and seeing Piscalat, Neput and Cory seemingly enjoy themselves besides the Idaten is cute. For now.
