The Case Study Of Vanitas “The Beast” Review

The Case Study Of Vanitas “The Beast” is the sixteenth episode of the Vanitas anime. And I finally get my wish from episode 15 to see more of Jean-Jacques’ story. I didn’t see it going quite the way it did though. With one minor twist and one big twist at the end, this episode is thankfully a big step up from the previous one.

The Beast Of Gevaudan

Ok so this episode worried me a tad at the beginning. Using Noe’s skills to see memories it show’s a part of Jean-Jacques’ life. At least the part where he becomes practically glued to Chloe, then the small reveal is made and the entire episode, thankfully stays in the present. Having Vanitas’ crew split up to take on different opponents, presumably so we can have well paced battles when they start.

Thankfully this wasn’t a filler episode. It had flashbacks and a backstory but that backstory actually lead somewhere. Rather than just giving us a deeper understanding of the character. Seeing the past had a purpose and served it’s purpose. I can’t help but feel that perhaps it was kinda written as a get out of jail method of allowing Jeanne to have her cake and eat it though. Now that she no longer has to worry about killing her best friend or saving people. And the blame for a lot of deaths has been shifted to the church. A whole lot of the emotional weight of this final battle is gone.

Overall a better than expected episode that’s ending has got me excited to see what happens next.
