Star Trek – Discovery Lands At SDCC
Star Trek: Discovery has officially landed at Comic-Con International: San Diego!!
The series took over the Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts Gallery in San Diego and put the costumes and props used by Starfleet, the Klingons, and more on display.
In the attached gallery of photos (first revealed at the official Star Trek website) you’ll see thirteen uniforms of Starfleet, Klingon, and Vulcan origins.
Star Trek: Discovery takes place about a century after the events of Star Trek: Enterprise but, like in Enterprise, Starfleet officers all wear blue uniforms.
The colour-coding for each officer’s uniform has changed. Enterprise and Star Trek: The Original series indicated gold for command, red for operations, and blue for science. The colorus were seen on piping on Enterprise‘s uniforms and as the primary color of the shirts on The Original Series.
Star Trek: Discovery uses piping, like Enterprise, and keep the gold for command, but swaps science blue for silver and operations red for bronze.
This may be a nod toward the original pilot for Star Trek: The Original Series, “The Cage,” which would have taken place around the same time in Star Trek‘s timeline as Discovery will. Captain Pike’s crew wore a similar blue excursion suit in the episode, and operations officers wore tan instead of red. This would be the second time Discovery has paid homage to the cage, having referred to the Michael Burnham character as “Number One” early on in production as a reference to Majel Barrett’s character from the origianl pilot, who was Pike’s unnamed first officer.
As for the Klingons, the producers have hinted that they’ll be a major part of Discovery and that their appearance will change depending on which house they belong to. In the gallery, you’ll see the appearance of members of House T’Kuvma and the stunning Torchbearer armor. The Torchbearer appears to be part of some kind of funeral ceremony involving the coffin seen in the trailer for Star Trek: Discovery (which can be seen above).
Star Trek: Discovery was at Comic-Con International: San Diego last week. Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp, and James Frain were in attendance, alongside Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman, Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts, Heather Kadin, and Akiva Goldsman for a panel moderated by guest star Rainn Wilson, who plays Star Trek: The Original Series character Harry Mudd on Star Trek: Discovery.
Set 10 years prior to the five-year mission of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery follows the adventures of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.
Star Trek: Discovery’s cast also includes Jason Isaacs as the starship Discovery’s Captain Lorca, Rainn Wilson as Star Trek: The Original Series character Harry Mudd, James Frain as Sarek, Spock’s father, and Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou, the captain of another Starfleet ship, the Shenzhou, which will be important to the plot of Star Trek: Discovery. Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp both play science officers. Mary Wiseman will play a final year Starfleet Academy cadet.
Star Trek: Discovery premieres Sept. 24, 2017 on CBS and on Netflix in the UK a day later.
