Review: Sideshow on Broadway

One word can explain my thoughts on Sideshow:  EPIC.

This past Saturday, during preview week for the show, I was able to get the chance to go to NYC and watch Sideshow.  At first, I wasn’t sure how I would feel sitting so far away from the stage, being up in the mezzanine and all, but regardless of where you get a seat, you will still be captivated.  Little details are missed being so far away, but not so much that you will miss out.

The main characters in the musical,  Erin Davie (Violet Hilton) and Emily Padgett (Daisy Hilton) were amazing.  From the beginning, if you didn’t know that they were indeed 2 separate people, you would think that they were actually conjoined twins.  They knew how to move with each other and harmonized each other perfectly.  You really fell in love with them right from start, feeling both their happiness and sorrow along the way.

Ryan Silverman (Terry Connor) and Matthew Hydzik (Buddy Foster) were exceptional in their supporting roles.  You didn’t know whether you wanted to love them or hate them from one scene to the next.

I think the biggest surprise for me was David St. Louis (Jake).  I was not expecting the sounds that came out of that man’s mouth when he first started singing. He was enthralling.  When he was on the stage, I didn’t want to look away.

The rest of the supporting cast was just as amazing as the main stars.  From the first words spoke until the closing curtain I didn’t want to leave my seat because I was afraid I would miss something.

Pulling it all together was director Bill Condon.  I was familiar with his work in both Dreamgirls and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2 and was excited to see what he could do on Broadway.  Needless to say, I was not disappointed.

So, if you get the chance to see Sideshow, DO IT!  You will not be disappointed.  You get drawn right into the world of Freaks along with the cast!
