A Brief Preacher Recap

At the end of last season, Tulip(Ruth Negga) was fatally shot by Lara Featherstone(Julie Ann Emery). Cassidy(Joseph Gilgun) wanted to turn her into a vampire, but a newly The Word-less preacher Jesse(Dominic Cooper) stopped him. They put Tulip in the back of her car and headed to…

Welcome to Angelville

Angelville.

We flashback to a time when Angelville was a thriving tourist attraction and place where Gran’Ma(Betty Buckley) Marie works real magic…for a price. Cruel and domineering to even her own family, she is the rock whose real, innate power holds ruthless sway over everyone. She even sends her thugs after her daughter Christine (Jesse’s mother), and slices her open to retrieve something she had swallowed.

Back in the now, Jesse and Cassidy are still arguing even as Jesse carries in Tulip’s lifeless body. In the heat of the moment(this is the South, so that is pretty literal), Jesse confesses that he and Tulip did the deed. Fists start flying, until crazy ass pervert T.C.(Colin Cunningham) stops them and Gran’Ma appears.

Gran’Ma

Preacher season 3

Gran’Ma is angry at Jesse, and seems set on not helping revive Tulip. In her mind, she betrayed the family-as one would tend to do when your grandmother puts you in a coffin underwater. But he tells her he would do anything, and will give her what she wants. This entails slicing his palm and letting drops of blood fall on her handkerchief that she quickly tucks away.

She sends Jesse and Cassidy on errands to get what she needs, while T.C.(have I mentioned he is a perv?) patches up Tulip’s body in anticipation of her resurrection.

Meanwhile, in Purgatory

Tulip is setting in what can only be described as an ’80s sitcom with her much younger self. There is a non working Kit Kat clock on the wall, and Tulip’s childhood is replayed. It even has a cheesy sitcom laugh track.

Bonding Over Hot Peppers

Cassidy and Gran’Ma get along just fine, as she tells him the story of the man she loved and how she used a draught to capture her man, and how the concoction was very literal. She gives the addict who will drink or take anything a Scorpion pepper(Not as hot as the Carolina Reaper, but pretty damn hot), and it is too much even for him. She makes him eat it, though, saying the suffering may bring Tulip back. She also says that because Cassidy brought Jesse back to her, if he needs something, to let her know.

Jody

Jesse needs help from the man that killed his father. Jody(Jeremy Childs) is heckin’ huge, and his assholery is just as huge, even though he hugs Jesse. Damn, this “family” is messed up…

They get what they after, after shooting and fighting their way out.

The fighting ain’t done yet, because Jody wants Jesse to have a go-Jody is the only man Jesse hasn’t beaten.

He still ain’t beat him. The man can lift the front end of a truck. How do I know? He tries to drop it on a beaten down Jesse, but Gran’Ma stops him.

Resurrection, In the Setting Room, With a Battery

It is time to revive Tulip, and there isn’t much time. Cassidy tries to play music, but the man does not know Tulip. Tulip is in Purgatory, eating Boo Berry cereal with her younger self. She pulls a battery that had been in her bowl out of her mouth. This battery is important, as she uses it to get more time by putting it in the clock, and is brought back to life.

Gran’Ma tells Jesse “Welcome home,’ and we get welcomed to Season 3.

Thoughts on Preacher Season 3X01:

  1. Does Gran’Ma know what Cassidy is?
  2. The pepper scene, though. I think she was yanking Cassidy’s chain.
  3. What did Jesse need the “transport” for?
  4. Damn, Jody.
  5. Damn, Gran’Ma-slicing up your own kid?
  6. The sitcom Purgatory was kind of meh. But Ruth Negga can make anything work.
  7. Betty Buckley needs an Emmy for this.
