Preacher Season 2X05 “Dallas”

  • Not a lot happens, but a lot happens.
  • A few spoilers, so beware.

This episode of Preacher is told mostly in a series of flashbacks, as to how Jesse(Dominic Cooper) and Tulip(Ruth Negga) fared after they were crossed by Carlos, and Tulip lost their baby, then goes into how Tulip met Viktor.

Viktor is trussed up in the late torturer Pat’s room. Jesse is wanting to kill him, even going so far in his rage to use The Word on Tulip.

Jesse is a bartender, hanging with a loser named Reggie who tears up Jesse’s Bible to roll joints. Despite Tulip’s lack of religion, Reggie does not amuse her.

Tulip is a realtor’s assistant, carrying For Sale signs and making copies all day.

Jesse has a routine: he buys beer and a pregnancy test at the local convenience store. He drinks the beer, he and Tulip have sex, and she takes a pregnancy test. Tulip’s womb is always as empty as Jesse’s beer bottles, and they repeat the process.

But then Danni(Julie Dretzen) shows up for dinner. Danni has files, one with a very familiar Viktor face. She offers them work, but Jesse declines on their behalf. This is a woman that really wants her husband dead, even in flashback. Like, really. She insults the food and leaves. I hope that Tulip never gets a cooking show. I mean, I like peanut butter, but…

Something in the Vents

Jesse finds a bag in the ceiling vents, and confronts Tulip over it. She went behind his back and started working for Danni again. She explains that she is an O’hare and doesn’t know how to be good like Jesse does. What breaks Jesse the most is that Tulip has been on birth control. He takes his blind rage out on Reggie, wildly beating his face to a pulp.

He Has Two Pools

Tulip leaves, eventually finding Viktor. He has two pools. She marries him.

Back in the present, Tulip brings Viktor’s daughter, Allie(Stella Allen), to Danny’s house for safe keeping. Since there’s not much in the way of food, and no one on this show can cook, I hope she isn’t hungry. Cassidy(Joseph Gilgun) goes to find Jesse and try to talk him out of killing Viktor. Their back and forth when he does find him is dangerous and then just heartbreaking.

In flashback again, Tulip gets word that Carlos has been found, and she goes to find Jesse…

The Saint of Killers Comes A’Calling

Allie is back with her father, as Jesse did not kill him. She wants him to read her a story. He opens up the paper, she crawls into his lap, and the scene ends with the sweet picture of the two sharing a moment, just a father reading the Dow Jones averages to his daughter.

Just kidding, y’all! This is Preacher! Since Jesse used The Word as a weapon in Viktor’s compound, The Saint of Killers has come. Viktor orders Allie into the closet, and is immediately killed by The Saint. He finds Allie, and she tells him that she knows where the preacher is.

Thoughts

This episode is very slow, but it gives a lot of different set ups for future story lines. I think it will get a lot of complaints for not being as frenetic as past eps, but a second viewing, or viewing at the end of the season, will elevate and validate it.

Seriously-never accept food from Tulip, or a drink from Cassidy.

Cassidy handing a box of lentils to Allie was so funny, I had to rewind my DVR and watch it again.

The throwback of the “Til the end of the world” quote is used so achingly beautiful here.  Then it becomes a  sharp weapon here.

Both Tulip and Jesse call out Cassidy on his BS here, and he does not deny it.

Cassidy tipping over the gangster at the mansion was neat. I was surprised he didn’t snack.

Reggie is an ass, and I think when Jesse comes out of his numbness, that beating was partly for defacing the Bible.

Stella Allen is brilliant as Allie. She isn’t over precocious, but acts like the child of a gangster father that she thought unbeatable most likely would.

Can’t wait for next week’s ep.
