Review: Outlander – Episode 2 – Do No Harm

November gives us a lot to be thankful for family, friends and the return of Outlander Season 4. But what I am being thankful for today is Outlander – Episode 2 – Do No Harm. This episode blew me away and really made me think long and hard about the past and how far we have come, how far back Claire had really gone.

Synopsis Outlander – Episode 2 – Do No Harm:

Claire (Caitriona Balfe)and Jamie (Sam Heughan) visit his Aunt Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy) at her plantation, River Run. When tragedy strikes at the plantation, Jamie and Claire find themselves caught between what’s right and the law of the land, ultimately facing an impossible decision.

Claire (Caitriona Balfe) has had to endure some challenges when she fell through the stones, but I think this latest challenge, slaves, is the hardest one she has had to face. Living in Boston in the 1960s Claire has seen things and knows things about all being equal, but in Outlander – Episode 2 – Do No Harm, she has to own people and that is just not working for our girl.

Our couple, Claire and Jamie (Sam Heughan) arrive at River Run, the plantation owned by Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy), and this sprawling estate can take ones breath away for a few reasons. The first reason, is the grandeur of it all, its breathtaking estate and the sprawling lands all around, and the second is who is working on said estate, the slaves.

Reading about slaves and knowing about slavery via history books is one thing, but seeing it in person had to be the most horrific and off-putting thing to Claire. This episode was shot beautifully, and tastefully with being as accurate as it could be. The tensions and emotions conveyed by all were felt deep down.

Honestly after hearing America The Beautiful, by Ray Charles, at the end of last weeks episode America The Beautiful, I didn’t think I could be rocked to my core, this soon by Outlander, and I was wrong.

Claire having to take care of and help a slave that was hanging and had a hook in his side, knowing full well he has to die for his crimes, but her modern brain and being a doctor kicked in and ignored the outcries for justice.

Claire and Jamie barely settled in at River Run, were called to mill, where Claire sees a black man being strung up on a hook. The white men, the owners wanted him killed for justice for taking the blood of a white man, were doing their own justice, Claire springs into action as a doctor.

Originally being called in to tend to the man hurt, her focus was quickly on the man on the hook. Cries ensued, and Jamie took charge, and helped bring the man to the big house so Claire could help him. The slaves inside of the house were horrified and confused watching Mistress Claire tend to the man, but helped as she barked orders to fetch things. Naturally this is an nightmare for Jacosta, who knows what will have to be if and when Claire saves this man, after all it’s justice.

How will Claire survive in this time when Jamie, who was appointed heir to River Run, stay here and own slaves? Easy, she won’t. I mean she bought a slave once before, if only to save him, and I sense this will come shortly, if they are to remain at River Run.

Claire saves the man, but Jamie has to ask her the unthinkable, she must help his soul and kill him. The other owners have gathered, they are taking shots at the house, he must die. The oath she took to be a doctor, has to go out the window, she has to save his soul. She does what she has to do in the most humane way possible. The “savages,” the owners took the man that was clearly dead, and dragged him off, to be hung, to be made an example of.

Witnessing what was know to have been factual events, was dramatic and hard to watch as well as hard to look away from. The cast and crew knocked it out of the park, and really made you think.

What did we wonder about in Outlander – Episode 2 – Do No Harm and want more of:

  • Will Jamie and Claire stay at River Run
  • Why is Young Ian so interested in the natives
  • When will see Marsali (Lauren Lyle) and Fergus (César Domboy) again
  • What can happen if Claire and Jamie free any of the slaves to history
  • Will Jamie take Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) up on his offer
  • Will we learn the back story to Ulysses (Colin McFarlane), who seems wiser and smarter than most
  • What is Farquard Campbell (James Barriscale) really up to

Hopefully we will get these questions and answered and so much more when Outlander Episode 3 The False Bride airs Sunday November 18th. What did you enjoy most about this episode and what more did you want to see?
