Nicole Maines Cast as First Transgender Superhero on Supergirl!

Warner Bros. Television hit us with some groundbreaking news at yesterdays Comic-Con Panel. We got a bunch of teaser trailers, casting news and release dates for some of the most loved shows on The CW.

We also got a new trailer for our beloved Supergirl – check out the trailer below:

San Diego Comic-Con News!

As we learned on saturdays panel at SDCC the superhero show will get three new cast members. Huge news were that Nicole Maines, who’s a transgender activist will join the cast. She will portrait the role of Nia Nal aka Dreamer and will be the television’s first transgender superhero.

Joining Maines are new series regular April Parker Jones, who will play Colonel Haley, and David Ajala, who will recur as Manchester Black.

Nia is being described as a soulful transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others.

On the new season she will follow in Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) season 1 footsteps in coming into her own and fulfilling her destiny as a superhero.

Colonel Haley is a hardline career military woman who lives and dies by the orders of her commanding officers and will act in the country’s best interest. Even when it doesn’t match her own.

Manchester Black has a dark past but easily deflects the brutality of his mission with charm and a sense of humor.

Those three are joining the previously announced series regulars Jesse Rath as the Legion of Super Heroe’s Brainiac-5 and Sam Witwer, as Agent Liberty.

Interview with Nicole Maines at SDCC!

There is also a interview between Variety and Nicole Maines – keep reading to learn more!

I haven’t really wrapped my head around it. It feels fitting to say with great power, comes great responsibility. I’m nervous because I want to do it right.

We can be whoever we want, we can do whatever we want, we can be superheroes, because in many ways we are. We’ve had trans representation in television for a while but it hasn’t been the right representation.

They’re men in dresses and that was damaging for a long time.

I think we’re in a time right now where more than ever representation in the media matters. And what we see on television has a very dramatic effect on our society.

I think that cis gender actors don’t take roles out of malice, it’s just a failure to realize the context of having cis gender people play trans gender characters. We don’t see the same issue with sexuality, we see straight people play gay all the time. With trans folks we have a lot of people accusing us of just playing dress up for whatever reasons and that’s just not true. Having trans people play trans roles show that we are valid in our identities and we exist.

Supergirl returns for season 4 on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. on the CW!
