Music Monday – 5IVE
Music Monday – 5IVE lets us delve into a boy band who thrived in the 90’s. Firstly they stole our hearts and then made us dance to the songs that they sung for us. It all started when the men responsible for the Spice Girls advertised and auditioned young men to be a part of a new hip band. Thousands auditioned and were eventually whittled down to 14 and then finally we got the final 5.
The Band
Richard Abidin Breen AKA Abz Love, Ritchie Neville, Scott Robinson, Sean Conlon and Jason ‘J’ Brown became the final Five. They released their first single in 1997 called Slam Dunk da Funk with a basketball theme to it. This record was signed with the one and only Simon Cowell and BMG/RCA who knows what he is talking about.
5ive had a 4 year run from 1997 up until 2001 when Sean Conlon left and the band split. They had 3 Albums released in that time 5IVE, Invincible and Kingsize (all in my possession). Even though they planned a reunion and were recording an album between 2006 and 2007. They eventually had to announce it wasnt happening as they couldn’t sign a record deal.
The Big Reunion
The Big Reunion was an ITV2 programme in 2013 that focussed on reuniting bands who used to top the charts. 5IVE had 4 of their members reunite as Jason ‘J’ Brown declined at the time. The reunion programme also had Bewitched, Atomic Kitten, 911, Liberty X, the Honeyz and Blue. The programme was a huge success with 1.2 million viewers in the first episode alone. The programme made way for a tour of its own and in 2014 they supported McBusted on tour.
