Loki “The Nexus Event” Review

Loki “The Nexus Event” is the fourth episode of the Loki series. Following the cliff-hanger of episode 3 Loki and Sylvie bond on Lamentis-1. Whilst Mobius and the TVA desperately try to track them down. They’re finally found and saved from death but at a huge cost.

Saved By The Enemy

Opening the show, after a brief recap, Sylvie is shown. As a child in Asgard happily playing. Until the TVA show up and arrest her. She’s taken in for processing but at her trial just before she can take the stand she steals Ravonna’s TemPad. Using it to escape. The show then jumps to Loki and Sylvie on Lamentis-1 where they’re both sitting waiting to die. Sylvie tells Loki she remembers bits of growing up on Asgard. Before the TVA time doors show up behind them and they’re both taken into custody. The TVA found them because of a massive spike in the timeline as Loki and Sylvie sat there bonding.

A rightfully angry Mobius takes custody of Loki and sends him into a time loop. Not before Loki can shout out to him the truth though, that the TVA is lying to all of them. Mobius obviously thinks he’s lying and sends him into the time loop. Where he has to relive Sif’s anger at him cutting her hair over and over again with no let up. Mobius has a chat with Ravonna, who won’t let him talk to Sylvie. He begs her but she won’t, she also tells him that he needs to keep it secret but Hunter C-20 is dead.

Finding The Truth

With Loki finally apologising to Sif. Mobius brings him out to talk to him. Where Loki finally tells him the truth, not after demanding to be told if Sylvie is OK though. He’s told she’s dead, where he shows just how heartbroken he is over her death. Mobius finds it hilarious that Loki has fallen for a variant of himself and assumes that’s what the nexus event was. Though he’s likely wrong. That’s when Loki drops the bombshell on Mobius, that he’s a variant and everyone at the TVA is. He just doesn’t know it. Mobius assumes it’s a lie and considers the matter closed. He does keep it in the back of his mind though as everyone has been acting strange. Hunter C-20’s death is suspicious, as is the actions of Hunter B-15 and especially Ravonna.

He celebrates with Ravonna and whilst she’s distracted swaps her TemPad with his. Later he uses it to look into an interview with Hunter C-20 who confirms what Loki said. She had a life before and is a variant. As are they all. As all this goes on, Hunter B-15 talks to Sylvie and takes her to the abandoned store she was found in. She asks Sylvie to show her her own past and offers her help. Mobius goes into the time loop Loki was thrown back into in order to let him know he’s on his side. In his own way. But just as they both leave the time loop they’re caught by Ravonna and another bunch of hunters. Mobius is pruned right there and then. And both Loki and Sylvie are taken to the Time Keepers by Ravonna.

The Time Keepers

Loki and Sylvie are taken via the elevator to the Time Keepers. Who look formidable at first. Just as they’re about to delete them both they’re saved by Hunter B-15 who uses the remote to remove both their collars. Ravonna and the other hunters with her get into a fight with Sylvie and Loki. Sylvie having her sword thrown back to her by hunter B-15. After an extensive fight scene Sylvie decapitates one of the Time Keepers as she’s done with hearing them talk. But they turn out to be nothing but complex androids. So they’re not the ones controlling the TVA.

Loki sees his chance and takes the opportunity to finally tell Sylvie just how much she means to him (not necessarily in a romantic way) but he stumbles over his words a lot. Whilst they’re both distracted, Ravonna prunes Loki from behind. Sylvie reacts and the credits roll with her threatening Ravonna and demanding she tell her everything. The after credits scene shows Loki in some sort of alternate timeline, thinking he’s dead and in Hel. But he’s told he’s not dead but will be if he doesn’t follow the speaker. He looks up to see a bunch of Lokis all through time.

Review

Wow. That ending scene was really something! I’m excited for what it hints at and I’m excited to see what Mobius may do knowing what he knows now. The whole episode is so much better than the previous one. Finally we have interesting characters with their own agendas showing themselves. And not so much Sylvie. I love Sophia Di Martino but her acting as Sylvie in episode 3 kinda made me hate the character. It’s probably a writing issue because this one she does much better and Sylvie is a much better character. She’s a full fledged character who’s personality isn’t just “smug” all the damn time, like before, she has emotions and shows them. She cares for people and she shows that with Hunter B-15.

Everything about this episode was better than the last and may even be on par with the first two. The writing is just so much better. B-15 is the absolute stand out star here. And Gugu Mbatha-Raw who plays Ravonna plays her so well I felt myself wanting to yell at her. She’s a great villain though clearly not the main one.

Looking forward to seeing where Loki will take us in episode 5. If it keeps up this quality of writing then it’ll be pretty solid. Last thing they should do is hand the writing over to Bisha K Ali again.
