Killjoys coming to the UK

Last summer SyFy debuted Killjoys as part of it’s SyFy Friday line up alongside Defiance and Dark Matter (another new show).

While I was hiking the PCT I kept seeing trailers in the run up to the show airing and it looked like just my kind of show, smart, funny, sexy stars and some decent looking action. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to watch the series due to my hiking schedule so imagine my delight when SyFy UK started running ads for the show!

Last week they tweeted a contest to go and try FPV Drone Racing to celebrate the launch of the show, which premieres on Monday 25th on SyFyUK, and I couldn’t resist the temptation to enter….and I won! A week ago I got notified that I’d won and not only would I be getting to try FPV Drone Racing but I would be getting to see the pilot episode almost a week before it airs here! I naturally freaked out (tricky as I was on the treadmill at the gym at the time) and then frantically arranged my travel as I had to be in London for 9am on Wednesday.

After an early morning train ride and a brisk walk through the centre of London I found myself at The Bargehouse on the Southbank, a very funky, disused industrial looking building that was quite in keeping with the tone of the show. I knew I was in the right place when I saw this through the glass door

I ventured inside as I was a little early and hung around until someone from the network came down and got me and escorted me upstairs to the reception area, I wish I had taken more photos as it had been styled to look very much like it was a set from the show, piles of cargo crates, exposed neon lighting…but it was bitterly cold and I could barely stand to take my hands out of my pockets!

While we waited for 9am to roll around I was chatting to some of the people from the network and the PR company that had organised the event and they told me that there was only going to be me and one other contest winner in my session, a couple of other winners a little later and the rest of the two day event was mostly for media types to review the episode!

We were soon taken in to a small room off the main area for the screening and I have to say I loved EVERY second of the show.

Set in a planetary system known as The Quad, Killjoys are bounty hunters who “cross contested jurisdictions for you, find who or what you’re looking for, and bring it back to you in the condition requested.” They have one very simple rule, The Warrant Is All!

The cast are great and the three leads work brilliantly together.

Dutch-Bio

Dutch (played by Hannah John-Kamen who also starred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens), the leader of the team, is a sexy, badass, no-nonsense chick with a wardrobe to die for. She also has a very mysterious past that I am sure is going to come in to play in the rest of the show.

Johnny-Bio

Johnny Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore) is her partner, he’s the tech guy with a smart mouth and a great relationship with Lucy, his ship. His smart mouth and big heart get him into some major trouble in the first episode.

Davin-Bio

And then there’s D’avin (Luke Macfarlane), the ex-soldier turned fugitive turned….Killjoy? Turns out he’s Johnny’s estranged big bro and he’s got some major issues too.

The minor players (at least as far as the first episode goes) are also awesome, my favourites are Bellus (Nora Mclellan), the broker who gives Dutch and her crew their Warrants, Fancy (Sean Baek), another Killjoy, this guy works solo and clearly hasn’t read “How To Win Friends and Influence People” and Pree (Thom Allison), the fabulously flamboyant owner of The Royale, a bar in the run down Old Town of Westerly where the Killjoys like to hang out between jobs.

The show was created by Michelle Lovretta, who also created Lost Girl, and comes from Temple Street Productions, the company behind cult hit Orphan Black!

After the screening we were taken up another few floors to meet our FPV Drone instructors. They briefed us on the equipment and how to use it and then it was time to give it a go.

SyFy UK have just posted a Behind The Scenes vid from the day itself and I’m briefly shown nodding intently as I listen to the instructor!

Which makes FPV Drone Racing look a hell of a lot easier than it actually was! I’m blaming the cold for the fact I couldn’t get the hang of it, but it was still a brilliant experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything!

Killjoys Season 1 premieres in the UK on Monday 25th January on SyFyUK. Season 2 airdates are not yet known.
