Julie and the Phantoms review: the teen rom-com you’d never thought you’d like

Spoiler free review of the new Netflix series and everything you need to know about it

Julie and the Phantoms is the new Netflix musical series. The first season can be found on Netflix and everyone can’t stop talking about it.

What not everyone knows is that the plot is based on the brasilian Nickelodeon show called “Julie e os Fantasmas“. This new version is produced by Kenny Ortega, also known for “High School Musical” and “Descendants”.

Julie and the Phantoms Synopsis

The main character is a teenager with a passion for music, Julie Molina (Madison Reyes), who lost her connection with music after the death of her mother, with whom she shared the same passion.

Everything changes when while going through the old CDs of her mother, three boys appear out of thin air: Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Alex (Owen Patrick) and Reggie (Jeremy Shada) who turn out to be a band died in 1995!

In the first episode, we find out that the name of the band is “Sunset Curve” and that they think they only died the day before.

Julie is the only one able to see them and, thinking that it’s a sign sent by her mother, she starts playing music again.

At the Spirit Rally held at her school, Julie plays on the stage along with her band against Carrie (Savannah May), her enemy and rival. During the concert, the band becomes visibile to the audience but they disappear again as soon as they finish playing. The surprised audience starts questioning Julie about the band, which she describes as holograms.

From this moment, Julie’s life with the Phantoms gets better. Julie gets back into the music program at school and the band plays more often.

As in every teen story, we have a villain: Caleb Covington (Cheyenne Jackson) is a famous ghost who owns the Hollywood Ghost Club. They get to know him thanks to Willie (Booboo Stewart), Alex’s love interest. But what they don’t know is that Caleb cursed them all.
