Is Constantine Returning to the CW?

Arrow Constantine

Could our favorite Master of the Dark Arts be returning to the CW?

Constantine is a heavy hitter in the DC comics world, and Matt Ryan’s appearance last year was one of the highest rated episodes of Arrow to date. The easter egg in the last episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow certainly gives credence to the rumor of his return.

Arrow Constantine

As this piece on Moviepilot suggests, the mid-season finale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow teased a very plausible way to bring Constantine (and possibly the Spectre) into the extended Arrowverse.

A supernatural element like the Spear of Destiny would certainly open a window for his return. Oliver Queen and even Supergirl are vulnerable to magic, and lack the knowledge to defeat it even as a team. The Spear (sometimes known as the Spear of Longinus) was said to have pierced the side of Jesus at the crucifixion. It gives the wielder immense power – something our heroes could do without The Legion of Doom getting their paws on!

Matt Ryan has said that he would love to return (and has in the upcoming animated Justice League Dark). This plotline definitely gives him and the CW/DC universe an excellent reason for John’s return.

Fans of the 2005 movie Constantine (starring Keanu Reeves) may recall the Spear of Destiny was a major part of that movie’s plot. Sadly however, Keanu’s interpretation was missing many of the elements for which Matt has become a fan favorite. His spot on portrayal of the occult detective included the blonde hair, punk rock background and, oh yeah – BEING A BRIT!

If Constantine does appear for this storyline, it would be a great opening to bring him permanently into the CW fold. Whether on his own revamped show, or as a welcome member of Legends we will have to wait and see.
