Hunger Games Theme Park Decision

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed the studio’s decision to open a theme park based on the “The Hunger Games” franchise. The decision was announced during the company’s earnings conference for the first quarter of its fiscal 2015.

“We’re deep in conversations with prospective partners on four continents to explore theme park attractions and other location-based entertainment opportunities,” Feltheimer told analysts.

Two parts of the four-part series are yet to be released, with the third one, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1,” arriving in cinemas this November. Till now, the franchise has earned $832.6 million at the worldwide box office.

The entertainment company, which has a market capitalization of around $4.5 billion, is partnering with a popular builder, Thinkwell Group, for it’s theme park’s construction. As part of its promotional activites, Lionsgate is launching a touring exhibition of The Hunger Games in the summer of 2015. Touring museums across the US will also help the company promote the final chapter, “Mockingjay Part 2.”

The Hunger Games theme park can prove to be a milestone for Lionsgate because in addition to creating new opportunities for its fans, it will generate significant financial benefits for the company.

However, even with news regarding the Hunger Games-based theme park making waves, the future prospects and workability of this project are anticipated to remain bleak. Despite massive popularity of the Hunger Games franchise, the success of Lionsgate’s new theme park cannot be predicted for certain. Fans are being asked to pay $50 for a theme park tour compared to $10 for a cinema visit, which could lead to a very low turnout. Another point of consideration is that the theme park is based on movie content which is less family oriented, as compared to other theme parks like “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.” This can also translate into a smaller potential audience size.
