Even though fans may have hoped that Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan would bring graphic parts of the novel to life in the film, it’s not going to happen. It’s hard to tell, with such a provocative book, how the producers and writers would bring certain aspects to the front and center of the screen, but due to contract negotiations firmly in place, there will be no full frontal action on Dornan’s part.
“There were contracts in place that said viewers wouldn’t be seeing my, um…” he told the U.K.’s Observer newspaper in an interview. Asked if he was referring to his “todger,” a British slang word for penis, he laughed and said: “Yeah, my todger.” “You want to appeal to as wide an audience as possible without grossing them out. You don’t want to make something gratuitous, and ugly, and graphic,” he said, adding that he thought the film would more rely on viewers’ imaginations.
Dornan’s interview with the Observer newspaper also reveals his thoughts on some of the more racier scenes, such as spanking his co-star Dakota Johnson.
“Anyone who thinks actors get turned on doing sex scenes in films is mistaken,” Dornan said. “There are dozens of hairy men standing around, moving cables and lighting equipment. That’s not sexy unless you’re into being watched, which I’m not.”
So the big question is, what exactly from the racy book will be brought to the screen? I guess we will just have to wait until February 2015 to find out.
