Fantastic Beasts Sequel Already In The Works

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hasn’t even hit theaters yet and it was just announced that Warner Brothers has plans for the sequel to be released on November 16, 2018.  The first film, which is a prequel to JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series, is scheduled for theatrical release this November 18.  In total, it is rumored that there will be three films, the last being scheduled for release in 2020.

Fantastic Beasts is set in New York City, 70 years before Harry Potter.  It follows Newt Scamander (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne) and his account of the 85 different and dangerous magical creatures in the world.  In the Harry Potter universe, the book is a required textbook for first-year Hogwarts students, having been an approved textbook since its first publication. It is not clear why students need it in their first year, as students do not take Care of Magical Creatures until their third year. However, it may be used as an encyclopedia of Dark creatures studied in Defence Against the Dark Arts classes.  (Wikipedia)

The screenplay for this movie was written by JK Rowling, which was also her first foray into screenwriting. The sequel screenplay is said to dig deeper into the dark times of the wizarding world, focusing on Scamander and the other heroes of the first film, as they decide where their allegiances lie.

David Yates, who directed the final four movies in the Harry Potter franchise and the first Fantastic Beasts, is said to be returning to direct the sequels as well.  As of yet it hasn’t been announced if the cast will be returning.
