FairyFare #1 Kickstarter Preview

FairyFare #1 is the brand new comic from writer Nick Bryan and Illustrator Rosie Alexander, the fabulous team behind The Little Deaths of Watson Tower, which is funding now on Kickstarter (more on that later). Imagine being able to get magical assistance with your problems at the touch of an app? FairyFare has got you covered.

FairyFare #1 Synopsis

After centuries spent trudging from door to door granting wishes, one of the fairyfolk looked at the modern world of smartphones and gig economies and realised – there should be an app for this.

Log onto FairyFare now, and have your problems solved, tasks completed and crises averted, all in one snap of a magic finger. Or why not join the team as a pixie, attending call-outs and improving lives one job at a time, with the help of a menagerie of magical creatures? Sisters Philippa and Natasha Spaight both signed up, and… Phil seems really happy with it!

Admittedly, Tash quit and is now out looking for a new job, as she couldn’t stop wondering – is cash-for-miracles really the way to a better world? And why do these fairies want human money anyway?

Review

After their previous black and white collaboration, FairyFare is a full colour feast for the eyes.

Taking the dubious phenomenon of the gig-economy and giving it an urban fantasy twist, FairyFare is a really fun read. It centres on two sisters, Phillipa and Natasha, who are pixies. Phillipa is registered on the FairyFare app, undertaking menial jobs for others using her magical powers. Natasha used to be on FairyFare but quit, hoping to find another gig-based job. Unfortunately she finds that trying to make it as a Pixie in the every day gig economy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

FairyFare is genuinely funny in places, but also offers an interesting take on the current job market, where hustling piecemeal jobs for often meagre pay has become a worrying trend. The page where Tash tries her luck with a bunch of other apps is hilarious, but also a little sad. I imagine there will be freelancers out there who will read this one and wince a little.

There’s also a larger story at play, teased neatly in this opening issue, revolving around why magical creatures need to be charging for their services. What exactly are they using the money for? I am definitely excited by the premise on this one and looking forward to the rest of the series (which I am informed is set to be 4 issues in total).

Rosie’s art is an absolute treat. If you saw the full colour cover for Little Deaths then you’ve had a taste of what’s to come inside this issue. I loved the magic effects. They have a beautiful, soft, psychedelic quality to them. The colours throughout almost shimmer off the page, which only serves to enhance the otherworldly aspects of this book.

FairyFare Internal Art

I absolutely would not hesitate to recommend this book. Hopefully the rest of the series won’t be too long as I cannot wait to see how the story unfolds.

The Kickstarter

The Kickstarter is funding now and, as of typing they are just under 2/3rds funded. Reward tiers include digital or physical options, as well as being able to add on Bryan and Alexander’s previous book. You can snaffle FairyFare #1 for just £2 for digital or £4 for physical which is frankly bargainous. The original art for Rob Ahmad’s pinup has been snapped up, but you can still bag yourself the original artwork for Sonya Kinsey’s pinup or a digital commission from the wonderful Rosie Alexander.
