Doctor Who Star Peter Capaldi Steps Down

Peter Capaldi, the 12th actor to portray the lead role in the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, announced that he is stepping down.  Capaldi made the announcement during an interview with Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2.  He first took over the role in 2013. When asked about the upcoming series, Capaldi stated that he feels like it is time to move on.

“I feel sad, I love Doctor Who, it is a fantastic programme to work on,” he said. “It can’t praise the people I work with more highly, but I have always been someone that did a lot of different things.”

Doctor Who, first broadcast in 1963, is a popular British series featuring the Time Lord, aka “The Doctor”. He travels through space and time in a telephone booth known as the TARDIS.  The series originally aired from 1963 to 1989.  It then took a hiatus until 1996 . In 2005 the show was rebooted.  David Tennant took over the role as the 10th Doctor bringing the show back into the limelight.  Since then the series has had many award nominations, including noms for Best Drama Series, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

The show has quite a cult following throughout the world which has also led to many spin-offs including comic books, movies, novels and other television series (Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, K-9).

Series Lead Writer Steven Moffat to also Exit

In its 10th series, Doctor Who will be the last for not only Capaldi but for lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat as well.  While praising Capaldi and the work hat he has done on the show, Moffat also added:

“Like Peter, I’m facing up to leaving the best job I’ll ever have, but knowing I do so in the company of the best, and kindest and cleverest of men, makes the saddest of endings a little sweeter.”

This series is currently filming and will air in the spring.  The final episode will be on air at Christmas.
