Book Review: Murder With Monsters

Murder with Monsters, written by K.T.Katzmann(@IWriteMonsters on Twitter) is a fun mystery read for almost anyone.

Mildred Heavewater: Detective

Mildred is a detective, and a damn good one. So what if her diet is very specialized and she sleeps in a coffin? Considering she works for the section of the NYPD that deals with inhuman relations, Mildred’s many quirks are a good thing.

Forever stuck at sixteen in looks, the detective works with her cholesterol loving partner, “Newbie,” a human that she graduated from the academy with, but has aged as a living, breathing human.

…And The Rest

Among the exceptional staff Heavewater works with are Lovecraftian horrors with sexy voices, harpies that love donuts, a surly gargoyle, and a poltergeist librarian. There are werewolves, dog headed men, basically everything you can find “true,” albeit blurry photos of on the internet.

Oh, and don’t ask about the baby in the welded shut fridge that’s kept in evidence.

Eagle eyed(or older) fans of Kolchak and Isaac Asimov will love the cameos, but that’s all I’m revealing.

The Case

Golems, everyone knows, are protectors, not murderers. Heavewater knows this more than the rest of her co-workers. She is Jewish, and knows the ins and outs of golems from her upbringing.

But a young boy’s broken body found at a school may prove history wrong. The clues are all there, but how can a golem be a killer? Heavewater intends to clear the accused golem and find the real killer.

A Little Help From Her Fiend

There’s a new medical examiner in town(more specifically the basement). He’s tall, dark, and…hairy. Lance Levant-a Sasquatch-joins the NYPD and has some ideas about the murderer. His skills help Heavewater to untangle the clues left behind by the killer(or killers). It doesn’t hurt that she thinks he is a hottie, and he is kinda sweet on her.

Who’s the Killer?

What? You think I’m gonna tell?

That’s the great thing about this novel. A lot of suspects(the devil is a fame whore), but there are no obvious, hit you in the head clues. I had Se7en figured out twenty minutes in, and the reveal shocked me.

A Great Read

This is a great read for young adults and up. Mild cursing, some references to sex, but nothing overt. The story moves along great. There’s action, plot twists, and a stake or two. I would love to see this in comic book form.

And let me add this: The cover is beautiful. A lot of independent writers have the worst covers. They look like their eighth grade nephews did the cover using MS Paint. This cover is one of my favorite book covers, EVER. It hurt to donate it to my local library after reading.

I only had two real beefs. There were proofreading errors(but who really cares when the story is good? I’m just warning other OCD readers).

The other is more imitation beef, not full beef. Kind of like a drive thru burger that Newbie would eat on a stakeout. I am not into virtue signalling social justice. This has parts that teeter into that area, but don’t discount the book. This isn’t crazy SJW stuff, it actually moves the story along.

Murder With Monsters is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble in e-format, and can be printed and bound to order.
