Asha is a 23 year old graphic designer and blogger living in Richmond VA with a dark past. She grew up in India in a brothel where her mother was a prostitute and came to America to live with her father when she was 13. 10 years later and while she has survived, she lives her life under a strict set of rules and lives fairly sheltered in order to protect herself. Her most important rule: never get involved romantically.

Then she meets Blake, a 25 year old music venue owner with an equally dark past. From their first encounter, Asha finds it difficult to follow her own rules and can’t deny the connection between the two of them.

Can Asha overcome her demons to go beyond surviving to thriving and will Blake be the perfect broken piece to the puzzle of her heart?

As I walked back into my bedroom, I thought about Blake. Was he sleeping on the other side of my wall? Could he hear me in here?

I shook away my thoughts. I didn’t need to worry about what he was doing because he didn’t matter.

That’s when I heard the music.

“No way” I whispered.

The Lumineers “Stubborn Love” was playing softly through the wall.

It was one of my favorite songs, and obviously Blake had no idea why I loved the lyrics so much.

Talk about a crazy coincidence. I decided to tweet my favorite line.

AshaGirlRVA: It’s better to feel pain than nothing at all. #Lumineers #GoodnightMrGreenEyes

I plugged my phone into the spare charger on my nightstand and climbed into bed. I heard my phone ding a notification, which was nothing new, but decided to turn them off for the night.

I swiped my phone on, and then saw the comment left on twitter. I gasped.

Blake_RVA: @AshaGirlRVA Glad you like it. #GoodnightMsBlueEyes

“Well shit.” I said before turning my phone off and throwing my arm over my eyes.

Do you have any tricks you use to get into the mood to write or do you simply sit down and roll with it?

I have a routine. Computer, drink (usually coffee), e-cig with an extra bottle of fluid, spotify, and headphones. I make sure my kids are taken care of, pop in my headphones, and go into the story.

Where do you get inspiration for your characters and plot lines?

Every character is real life inspired. As an adoptee and a foster parent I have had a lot of experience with survivors of childhood trauma. I take all of their stories, my own story, and the stories of victims I have either read about or seen in a documentary and combine them with a little edge and personality to create the characters. I feel like every character is real, even the antagonists. I have conversations with them, and their stories/plot lines are already in existence, it’s just my job to put them in writing.

How old were you when you started writing?

Since I could hold a pencil. 🙂

If you could collaborate with any famous author, who would it be and why?

Aleatha Romig. She has the ability to make you love and hate characters at the same time. Nobody is black and white, there’s always gray. Her ability to showcase the good and the bad with a ton of twists and turns is amazing and if I ever had the opportunity to work with her that would be a dream come true! 🙂

If you could spend a day with any fictional character, which one would it be and why?

Caleb from the Dark Duet series. He is the very definition of overcoming the result of trauma.

Favorite band/musician?

The Used. 🙂

Favorite city you’ve visited so far?

Alki beach in Seattle

A city that you’d like to visit?

Cairo. I’m a little obsessed with Egypt.

Favorite food?

Let me preface by saying that I love all food from all ethnicities but there is nothing better than mac and cheese.

If you had to pick one city to be lost in for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

I think I’m here. 🙂 I absolutely love Richmond. If it had to be anywhere but here it would be Paris. Any place that thrives on good wine, cheese, and bread is a winner for me. 😉

About author(s)

Nikki

I'm a midwest girl in my early 30s with a love of costume jewelry, lattes, and farmers markets. The written word is it for me. I love to craft my own stories, as well as devour those that others have written. Outside of writing and reading, I love film, music, baseball, trying new restaurants, traveling, craft beer, and spending time with my friends and family.
