Wynonna Earp – Shed Your Skin review of 2×2

Editor’s Note – Apologies for the late posting of this Wynonna Earp-Shed Your Skin review. We will be back on schedule shortly!

  • Goo Gone could have sponsored Wynonna Earp-Shed Your Skin; the episode is soaked in it.

Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) and co. are under Black Badge’s thumb, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be squirming out from under it any time soon. Shed Your Skin and wriggle free! Wynonna runs into an old acquaintance who, thanks to Wynonna, is able to buy up property cheaply. Innocent Wynonna is getting the blame for Bobo’s (Michael Eklund) mass poisoning of the city in season one.

Construction/remodeling has begun all over town as each building is purchased, but something is rumbling underground. A worker disappears and all that is found is some webby goo in a port o potty. Of course, as that is normal for port o potties, it is largely ignored. Wynonna gets wind of the missing worker and investigates, running into a character we haven’t seen since last season. He in turn runs from her after she is distracted by…something. Is it a ghost? She finds what’s left of the worker, encased in a gooey web sac.

Meanwhile, Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Haught (Katherine Barrell) are out of sync, uncharacteristically cool to one another. Haught senses something she can’t (literally) put her finger on, and Waverly is reading a young Willa’s diary. It reinforces Willa’s disdain for the youngest Earp.

Waverly and Wynonna dissect the webbed sac and get a large, eight legged surprise. Finally they capture and kill the demonic spider, with much goo. So much goo.

So. Much. Goo.

Doc (Tim Rozon) wants Shorty/Bobo’s bar, and makes a bargain with Black Badge to get it, seemingly throwing the Earp girls under the bus-again-in the deal.
Deciding that the apparition was Willa (Natalie Krill), the girls burn some of her possessions to exorcise it, and send her on. In the midst of their joy, they find that the eight legged demon spider was not the worst of their problems.

Also, do not leave demon spiders near Wynonna Earp’s snacks.

In true badass Earp fashion, Wynonna gives authority the finger and goes off to stomp the problem. More goo ensues. Do not wear suede on an Earp mission. Shed Your Skin indeed.

Haught brings a gift to Waverly, and they make up. A lot.
Waverly and Wynonna have heart to heart in the kitchen, and things seem to be smoothing back out.
Waverly decides to go for a snack, but there’s nothing in the fridge, and she has to make do.

Thoughts:

Shed Your Skin is pure Wynonna Earp. Ass kicking, irreverence, more one liners than half a season of Gilmore Girls, and a show that values family above all.
Haught sensing something is not right with Waverly, yet Wynonna not seeing it is perfect. When it is finally revealed to her, it will be devastating to everyone, with repercussions for seasons to come.

I like the blend of old and new characters this episode, and there are so many set ups for future episodes.

What is the odd thing Wynonna keeps seeing? Is it Willa? Or the mother of the demon spiders? Is it a new evil that Bobo and Willa let in?

We’ll just have to keep tuning in to find out!
