Wonder Woman Review

Let me start by saying that I have been a fan of Wonder Woman for over 40 years. Even though I was thrilled when DC announced a solo movie, I was scared the finished product would suck. On Wednesday May 24th, I had the chance to go to a fan screening and check if my fears were real. Turns out, the movie is AMAZING!

If you’ve seen Batman vs Superman, you will see there is a link between both movies. In fact, the Wonder Woman storyline starts off with Diana (Gal Gadot) receiving the original picture of herself and Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) that we have seen in the Batman vs Superman flick. Diana gets lost in her memories and this is where we learn how Diana of Themyscira becomes Wonder Woman.

We learn in the first few moments of the movie the Greek mythology that pushed Zeus to create the Amazons, their reason for living, defeating Ares. We learn that Diana was told by her mother, Hippolyta, that she was born out of clay and that Zeus brought her to life. We ultimately find out the truth later in the movie. The origin of the Amazons scene is fantastic, though I suggest you pay the extra few bucks and see it in 3D or Imax to get the full impact.

Diana’s world is shattered when Steve Trevor lands on her island. He is the first man she has ever seen. When she learns that war is tearing apart humans, she wants to leave the island and fight. Her mother warns her that if she leaves, she can never come back.

I will spare you the details but if you didn’t read any synopsis, I will tell you it is set during World War 1 and although it might seem clichéd, it works.

The playful banter between Diana and Steve are just great. Chris Pine is the perfect Steve, in my opinion. You feel the chemistry between the characters. They fight side by side and, ultimately, love side by side. Because yes, it IS a love story but not in the normal sense. There is no really big declaration but you just feel it.

The fighting scenes are very well choreographed and the essence of who and what Wonder Woman is is right there. Gal Gadot, who some people feared would not be up to the task, just fits. She pulls off the physical scenes like, well, Wonder Woman. She is funny and portrays the innocence of a woman learning of a new world like I didn’t expect. I wouldn’t see anyone else filling those boots to be honest. She is the mixture of grace and fight, the basis of the character.

I was impressed with the movie and honestly, I wasn’t sure if they could pull it off. They did, wonderfully. The way they linked both movies in which Wonder Woman appears works. The way the story is told tells the viewers there is so much more to come from the franchise.

As a life long fan of the heroine, I was not disappointed. To be honest, I shed a few tears seeing her come to life so beautifully. One thing they did right in this franchise is tell the backstory first. Yes, she is well known, as is her backstory but we did need to learn how Diana from Themyscira became Wonder Woman, what motivated her. This movie is a strong start for a franchise. The images are beautiful, the fighting is fierce, the score is perfect, Patty Jenkins has pulled it off. Though my suggestion still stands, pay the extra bucks to see it in 3D or Imax. It’s worth it.

As a fan of Wonder Woman, I was not disappointed and the people I talked to after the movie were all in agreement.

Wonder Woman is, well, wonderful.
