Wicked is finally headed to the big screen

Universal announces December 2019 release date for Wicked film

After 13 years on Broadway, ten Tony nominations and three wins, Wicked will finally be getting the silver screen treatment thanks to Universal. The show, based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, has been wildly popular from the beginning, when Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth debuted the characters of Elphaba and Galinda. Fans have been calling for a movie version for years, and rumors emerged every few years that it would finally be happening since Universal has owned the rights since the 90’s.

Thursday, Universal announced that December 20, 2019 fans’ dreams will finally come true. Stephen Daldry is set to direct, with Marc Platt producing. The pair are also producers of the Broadway production. We anxiously await further news regarding the script adaptation, casting and musical choices.

The internet will soon be ablaze with dream casts, I’m sure. Tell us who your dream cast would include in the comments!
