On heading up an all-female writers room and female directors on The White Princess:

“It was obvious to me that it should be an entirely all female writing staff … I said to the English production company, ‘if I work my way through every single female writer that there is and I can’t find enough good writers to start my writers room, THEN I’ll look at the men – well, I didn’t need to do that.” – Emma Frost, Showrunner/Executive Producer/Writer

“There are so many shows that only have male writers, directors – the numbers for women on shows and in the movies are abysmal. There is no reason for that whatsoever. It’s a political choice, but also this story is told from the female point of view so who better to write it than female writers?” – Emma Frost, Showrunner/Executive Producer/Writer

“There’s something in media and culture … when we see different scenarios, it starts to seep into us. Just having these women driving this plot forward … the entire production from the ground up was women … we start to learn that women can have these roles, women can be a certain way and you don’t need to be docile to be feminine … those sorts of little nuggets are so important as society moves forward. The more we see it, the better.” – Rachel Fleit, Writer, Director and Producer

“More women are becoming involved in what’s going on in the world … it’s very easy to have a voice and a point of view whether that’s through a camera, or a pen …. Whatever medium you choose, it’s very easy to now express your opinions. Shows like this [The White Princesses] probably help people talk about women in these kind of roles.” – Alice Gao, Photographer and Storyteller

“Feel slightly like we’ve gone backwards a bit. In my lifetime. Horrifies me that we are still having this conversation, horrifies me that it isn’t just fifty percent female characters, fifty percent female writers, directors, showrunners. And the fact that we even have to applaud ourselves when we have female-driven show depresses me. I feel like it was a little bit better five years ago and there’s been a backlash. … Of course we should celebrate the victories, but we can’t be complacent about. You have to just keep pushing.” –Emma Frost, Showrunner/Executive Producer/Writer

“So many strides to be made … just looking at social media everything does seem kind of one-noted or escapist still, and it’s not necessarily real stories.” – Alice Gao, Photographer and Storyteller

On the experiences of people of color in Tudor England:

“I would very much love to … move forward with a historical drama where people of color – women of color particularly – are the central protagonists and to discover some of those stories. [audience applause]” – Emma Frost, Showrunner/Executive Producer/Writer

On Equal Pay Day and the how to close the gender pay gap, especially in Hollywood:

“Pay women the same. It’s not complicated! [audience applause]” – Emma Frost, Showrunner/Executive Producer/Writer

The White Princess premieres on Starz on Sunday, April 16th at 8PM ET/PT and available for same day stream and downloads on the Starz app.
