Original partners Dean Devlin & Roland Emmerich return to Stargate franchise
The ‘Stargate‘ franchise is huge. The original 1994 movie spawned not one but 3 successful spin off series (Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate: Universe) and a couple of TV movies, finding a conclusion somewhere in 2011 with the end of Universe. While SG-1 spun off from the original movie it was not written or helmed by the pair who kicked everything off, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich.
The pair have recently re-teamed for Independence Day: Resurgence and that seems to have led to a revelation, that the original ‘Stargate‘ movie was planned as the first of a trilogy that never came to fruition. As such the pair are planning to reboot the first movie and tell the rest of their story. In an interview with Variety Devlin said
“It’s not a story that can take place 20 years later. So the only way to really tell that trilogy is to go back from the beginning and start the story all over again,”
It was also confirmed that they would not be using the continuity from the series, but would finish telling the story they originally intended to tell in the trilogy. I’m excited as all hell about this, I love the original movie and the spin off shows, but I always felt like the story is far more suited for the big screen rather than the small.
Assuming this reboot will keep the original characters but just expand on their stories this means a new Jack O’Neill, a new Daniel Jackson, hell even a new Skaara, and I cannot wait to see who they pick for those roles. Do you have any ideas? Who would you like to see walk through the Gate to explore new planets? Let us know what you think about this news, and who you want to see filling the boots in those iconic roles.
