So with the New Year approaching and the time for you to be thinking about, what needs to change and what should stay the same. A time when we all sit and rethink and sometime reinvent ourselves we put it all down to a new year and a new start. Bearing that in mind I looked at my DVD collection and decided to use the soundtrack for a film that is an example of how things can change given the right circumstances. A League of their own is set in World War II when woman stood up and took on jobs they normally wouldn’t have done, they filled in when needed to help keep the country running and in this film we see woman step up and play professional baseball to keep the masses of people who couldn’t go out to war still entertained.
Kit Keller (Lori Petty) and her Older Sister Dottie Hinson (Gina Davis) are picked to play Baseball Professionally, they start out having issues with their coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) as he is an old baseball player who was injured and is also a drunk who shouts, spits and isn’t happy doing the job. As things progress he improves on who he is and the team are pretty successful thanks to the game knowhow and ingenuity of Dottie. The woman have a hard time as they are made to wear short skirts and try to be as good as the men were, playing on with injuries when most wouldn’t. We have an amazing cast with Tom Hanks, Gina Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna amongst the big names giving you a really good performance along with the story.
Their time is short as the war ends and the men come back, but even if for one season in baseball these woman shine! This film is a great heart-warming show that people can change and we all have to change with the times, so please listen to the songs that accompany the film along with a Madonna favourite of mine.
