Soundtrack Sunday: with Honors

If you want a degree go to Harvard. If you want an education go to Simon Wilder. – with Honors

I cannot tell a lie, I went to see this movie because Brendan Fraser (Encino Man, School Ties, Son in Law) was in it along with Moira Kelly (The Cutting Edge) and Patrick Dempsey (Can’t Buy Me Love, Mobsters, Grey’s Anatomy). I left the movie blown away, and with a lesson learned, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover.

Convinced his thesis will have him graduate with honors from Harvard University Monty (Brendan Fraser), a stuffy student finds himself at the mercy of a homeless man’s, Simon (Joe Pesci), demands when he holds the papers hostage. Simon makes a deal with Monty: for every day’s accommodation and food that Monty gives him, he will give a page of the thesis in return.

The only complication, Monty doesn’t live alone. And who wants to have a homeless man they don’t know sleeping in their house, just feet away from them? Everyone except uptight Jeffery (Josh Hamilton).

Monty in the pursuit of gathering up his paper, falls and breaks his leg, in the dead of winter in Boston. Long walks to and fro, Monty starts to learn all about Simon. Not all education can be taught and learned in a school. Life lessons, and observations are part of Monty’s education from his unlikely friend Simon.

The movie had a very obvious lesson, but it was a lesson that needs to be learned more. The soundtrack, was and is sublime.

Starting with a Duran Duran cover of Led Zeppelin’s Thank You and paced by Madonna’s I’ll Remember, this rock sampler is a mixed bag. The highlights are The Pretenders’ cover of Bob Dylan’s Forever Young, Lyle Lovett’s cover of Irving Berlin’s Blue Skies, and Lindsey Buckingham’s On The Wrong Side. The soundtrack brought a new generation to Led Zeppelin, and Duran Duran and people found out that Linsey Buckingham is a true talent apart from Fleetwood Mac.

Duran Duran – Thank You

You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look through the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the spectres in books,
You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me,
You shall listen to all sides and filter them from yourself.

Madonna – I’ll Remember

The Pretenders – Forever Young

Lyle Lovett – Blue Skies

I am of old and young, of the foolish as much as the wise,
Regardless of others, ever regardful of others,
Maternal as well as paternal, a child as well as a man,
Stuff’d with the stuff that is coarse and stuff’d with the stuff that is fine,
One of the Nation of many nations, the smallest the same and the largest the same.

Lindsey Buckingham –  On the Wrong Side

The entire soundtrack in my opinion is a timeless creation, that weaves young and old. The movie is haunting, loving and a caring movie that is humorous as well as sad. I hope that if you have never seen the movie, you look it up.
