Shadowhunters: Show-Runner Exits Season Two Production of Freeform Series

Shadowhunters Season 2 Delayed Due To Ed Decter’s Departure?

Despite saying in January, that he was hoping for 200 hours of the fantasy dramaShadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments TV show-runner and EP Ed Decter has left the Freeform series after its first season — reportedly over creative differences. Freeform renewed Shadowhunters for a second season, back in March. While the first season only had 13 episodes, Freeform has ordered 20 episodes of season two.

According to Deadline, Decter’s departure was “abrupt.” The Shadowhunters TV show cast includes: Katherin3 McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa, and Harry Shum Jr. It was Decter who developed the television adaptation.

Deadline‘s Nellie Andreeva writes:

I hear Decter departed a few days ago and was not present at today’s first table read for Shadowhunters‘ second season. I hear the departure was over creative differences, and the new showrunner(s) are expected to tweak the series’ creative direction for Season 2. In the meanwhile, production is expected to continue as scheduled, with no impact from Decter’s exit.

Shadowhunters follows Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara). On her 18th birthday Clary learns she is a human-angel hybrid. She uses her supernatural abilities to hunt demons.

The first season finale episode, Morning Star, aired on April 5, 2016. Decter had planned to introduce new characters, including the Seelie Queen — queen of the faeries of the Seelie Court, when he teased fans after the finale.

This departure does not seem to add up with Decter’s previous interviews. It couldn’t have been planned from the beginning because he had been so enthusiastic about the Shadowhunters Season 2. Fortunately, despite his absence, the show does not plan to delay anything.

Ok, Shadowhunters you can resume breathing again. Did you hear? There won’t be any delay!

According to Game N Guide, Freeform was able to secure someone that can fill Decter’s place. Shadowhunters Season 2 will be helmed by Darren Swimmer and Todd Slaykin. They had the show-runners of Smallville.

Fans of Shadowhunters Season 2 can expect the series to follow its scheduled release since the show-runner issue has been solved. Swimmer and Slaykin  have also worked with Syfy’s Dominion.

Speculations have risen that a change of plot might happen. With having new show-runners this could make this a possibility and a reality.

It has been reported that the reason for Decter’s departure was creative differences. Avid followers will soon find out if City of Ashes is still to be the materialized. Shadowhunters Season 2 is expected to air on early 2017.
