Shadowhunters Day of Atonement Spoiler Free Preview

Welcome back Shadowhunters fans. We had to take a break from our usually scheduled preview/review process last week but we are back! I’ve just had a watch of the latest episode so I hope you are ready for my Day of Atonement Spoiler Free Preview!

The Day of Atonement in the title refers to the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. This is weighing heavily on Simon (Alberto Rosende) given the events of last week – not to mention the last few months. He’s got a lot he feels he needs to atone for. Gotta say, this is the first episode in a good long while where I haven’t felt like I wanted to punch Simon in his annoying face. So that’s point one in this episode’s favour.

Point two – Every. Single. Scene between Valentine and Sebastian. Alan Van Sprang and Will Tudor do some seriously fantastic work. All of the applause for them.

I gotta show some love to the director of this episode. As those of you who have been around a while might know, I used to cover The Originals and, to a lesser extent, The Vampire Diaries. TVD star Paul Wesley steps behind the camera on this one and does a brilliant job. As you can see from some of these behind the scenes pictures he and the cast were working in some extreme circumstances, but the results are outstanding!

Seriously, the stuff in Idris – which is BEAUTIFUL btw – looks like a Shadowhunters catalogue shoot. This season’s latest looks –  thigh holsters and wet-look leather accessories. HOT!

Now I KNOW there were some folks out there who were unhappy that Magnus and Luke aren’t in this episode. 1 – they are mentioned. It’s not like they are out of sight, out of mind. 2 – I felt like there was so much packed into this episode that I didn’t really have time to miss them. If there had been scenes featuring them then other stuff would have felt a lot more diluted/scattered.

As far as ship stuff goes, obviously without Magnus there’s no Malec content this week. The Clace shippers though, you guys should be pretty happy with this episode. I know I was. Their relationship changes considerably from the start of this episode to the end – in a good way.

Special mention: It was so great to see Paulino Nunes back as Robert Lightwood. While the character has his flaws, most of which get called out in this episode, I do love the actor!

All in all, I found Day of Atonement to be a solid episode. It answers some questions and opens some pretty major doors. There are some revelations too. Not all are earth-shattering, especially if you’re a book reader, but they move the show on nicely. I, for one, am excited to see where things go from here with just 4 more episodes left in season 2!
