This week on Starz hit series Outlander – Vengeance Is Mine, the war rages on and old friends make an appearance

Warning: This article contains spoilers from last night’s episode of Outlander. Read at your own risk.

What’s the saying again, “you may have won the battle, but not the war,” well the war rages on in this week’s episode of Outlander -Vengeance Is Mine.

This week’s episode of Outlander had it all, action, drama, suspense and the love of our two main characters Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) all written by Diana Gabaldon.

Diana wrote our beloved books and wrote Outlander -Vengeance Is Mine, and I was blown away. Emotions were still raw and high after last week’s gut wrenching episode that killed off fan fave Angus Mhor (Stephen Walters). Rupert (Grant O’Rourke) is still mulling over his best friend’s death as the highlanders start leaving for home after Jamie cannot change the Prince’s (Andrew Gower) mind.

“I’VE KEPT MY WORD. I LAY YOUR VENGEANCE AT YOUR FEET.” – MURTAGH FITZGIBBONS

Remember that Dougal (Graham McTavish) got exiled by the Prince and Jamie, well now he’s bringing the group with him, to Inverness of all places. This is of course after Jamie started to send most of the families back to Lollybroch.

Naturally things go wrong, one it is our main characters and two it is a time of war. The redcoats find and nearly ambush our highlanders, and as they are trying to make their escape on horse, Rupert gets shot, in the eye, and Dougal has to rescue him as they try to find a place so Claire can see what the damage is.

The find a church to regroup in and see how bad Rupert is injured and find the group of Highlander’s that are part of their group. Claire tugs out the bullet from Rupert’s eye and just as they are beginning to breathe a sigh of relief, the redcoats show up.

What’s a girl to do to save her man and those that she loves that are family? Why, pretending once again to be a Scottish prisoner of course.

With Claire now captive, Jamie goes to rescue mode, with Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) at his side. Dougal is convinced he knows where they are taking her, but he is very wrong. Luckily for Claire she runs into Hugh Munro (Simon Meacock) so she can get a message to Jamie as to her location.

To Claire’s surprise when she arrives at the estate, she learns that it is none other than the Duke of Sandringham’s (Simon Callow) home. Afraid she will be given up and he will blow her cover Claire continues her charade, and to her relief the Duke goes along with it. I mean after all he does play every angle he can and then some.

To the delight or relief of Claire who else, is staying at the home Mary Hawkins (Rosie Day), and finds out that she is the god-daughter of the Duke. Mary urgently has to speak to Claire.

Claire trying to keep her wits about her, sides with the Duke to get a message out to Hugh, so he can find Jamie and tell him rescuing her is a trap.

Just when Claire doesn’t think things can get worse than they are, she discovers that the Duke not Comte St. Germain (Stanley Webber) was to blame for Mary’s rape. Her own godfather. Claire is sent to her room and locked there while they wait for Jamie to rescue them. Naturally looking out for his own ass the Duke is happily going to hand over Red Jamie to the redcoats as well as his wife and the rest of the Jacobites.

Fear not. Jamie and Murtagh to the rescue.

Mary attempts to help and gets word to Hugh, and gets caught by her rapist in the house, not knowing its her rapist, Claire is there and before you know it, so is Jamie and Murtagh along with the Duke. One thing leads to another and Murtagh keeps his word.

And just like that Mary is scarred for life, and was added to the group heading for Inverness, or home.

Stray observations:

  • Probably one of the coolest thing about Vengeance Is Mine is how it’s proof positive that you don’t need the gift of speech to play a critical role in a rescue mission: Bravo, Hugh Munro. Claire and Jamie owe you their lives.
  • The loss of Angus Mhor and his right eye haven’t done anything to damage Rupert’s sense of humor. Who else would explain his injury as having “decided to take a closer look at a musket ball”?
  • Perhaps Fergus has a future in medicine too – anyone else catch that shot of him examining Rupert’s removed eyeball in fascination?
  • There are so many flawless Simon Callow-delivered lines in this episode, but I think the winner has to be, “The last thing I would do, my dear, is to blurt.”
  • While Murtagh’s axe secures the MVP award (that’s Most Valuable Prop), I have to give the MVA (that’s Most Valuable Accessory) to the duke’s fabulous fur-trimmed cape.
  • For all of Callow’s comedic brilliance this episode, Duncan Lacroix deserves an honorable mention too. Murtagh’s exasperation in trying to decipher Claire’s terrible Gaelic was just priceless: “She’s even misspelled ‘help!’”
