In this second week episode of WGN America’s Outsiders, the ground work for what is to be expected an explosive first season continues.

The start of the show is on the slow side, but again its the groundwork that is being laid for the rest of the season. We see Tyler (Eric Wiegand) in the beginning talking to Sheriff Houghton about the events of the night, that he stabbed and killed his father. Sheriff still asking and questioning and almost insisting it had to be meth or something, it couldn’t be just moonshine, but as we know it wasn’t just moonshine, it was Farrell wine. Tyler kept mumbling that he loved his dad over and over again, that he was sure it wasn’t his father he ad killed.

“When I stabbed him with the knife that man wasn’t my dad it was the devil.”

Cue to the drama on Shay Mountain.

Asa (Joe Anderson) trying to find a place to eat, is confronted by none other than Big Foster (David Morse), who is acting Bren’in while his mom is “sick”. Big Foster is relentless in throwing his weight around and not allowing Asa to fit in, despite the fact that Asa has served his time in the box for six months, and that he is now part of the family once again. Asa being disgusted, leaves hungry and runs off to the familiar face of G’Win (Gillian Alexy), who does continue to give him the cold shoulder.

G’Win not wanting temptation around becomes the little bird whispering in her man’s ear, Little Foster (Ryan Hurst), about calling a circle once and for all to get rid of the problem. Big Foster not being a stupid man knows the words coming out of his sons mouth are those of his woman, and not his has no choice, but to agree with him, Little Foster had already called a circle.

Things not going the way Big Foster wanted them, when he and Asa both talk to the circle, G’Win decides to take matters into her own hands.

“A circle cannot decide his fate”

Stands up and declares they do it the way of their ancestors and have a pit fight. The clan goes wild, knowing full well that Little Foster will for sure win and things can finally get back to normal.

A new player has come to the game, now that big coal has died, Hayley Grimes, the pr powerhouse that is whispering in all the local towns peoples ears. Planting seeds of drugs, and elections, and the fact that 58% of the population is in favor of the clan keeping Shay Mountain.

“Farrells are part of the history, the legend of the town.”

Krake (the wine maker) is proving to be a friend and ally of Hasil (Kyle Gallner) as well as Asa. Krake helps Hasil to clean his wound(which Big Foster caused by cutting off two fingers), and just in time so Hasil can go down the mountain to see Sally Ann (Christina Jackson). I digress, Krake helps Asa to find an ATV so that he can fight Little Foster in the pit fight(the pit fight is just a modern day jousting, on ATV’s and using bats). Krake to Asa:

“You need to fight, and win”

Big Foster not pleased with his son, as he watches him practice for the big fight, decides someone else needs to fight. Little Foster tells his Fa, I can win it, and you know it. Big Foster has just one response on his only son.

“If you don’t beat him, you ain’t my son no more.”

Back to the creepy, yet budding romance between Hasil and Sally-Ann. Sally-Ann realizes how sheltered Hasil really is. He doesn’t know proper terms, has never watched TV, doesn’t even know who Katy Perry is.

“The only thing I know about her, is she ain’t half as pretty as you.” – Hasil

Kinda gotta say as weird as the pairing of the two of them is, I am kinda rooting for these two, to find a way and make it work. He is no naive and has seen things, that she cannot fathom and vice versa. Two completely different worlds, but yet the attraction is undeniable.

The time for the pit fight has come, the one left on his ATV is the victor. Asa looking small and afraid of the beast sitting on top of his ATV, Little Foster. Asa has a stick and little padding or a helmet to protect him, while Littler Foster has a bat, a wicked looking helmet and is completely badass. After a few go rounds of brutal hits by Little Foster, it’s clear Asa is going to lose, he has lost the ability to use his ATV, in the fact that his gas line is cut. Littler Foster getting ready to seek the full power, lights his bat on fire, Asa is a sitting duck. If he jumps off the ATV he loses, if he stays on it he’s on it he’s a dead man. Asa quickly looks around, finding a piece of metal rebar, tosses it at the wheels of Little Fosters ATV and effectively knocking him off, Asa is the winner. Big Foster is disgusted, walks away he no longer has a son.

So many little plots lines are in place and more keep getting laid. The excitement is building and the internal chaos, and sides clearly being picked. We have ourselves a hit with twists and turns you just don’t see coming.
