Synopsis

Review of Antiquities

When deciding which types of movies I want to watch there are usually a few factors I look for: whether I like the actors involved in the film, the director that is bringing it to the big screen and the genre of movie.  Although I hadn’t heard of Daniel Campbell before I watched Antiquities, I was at least familiar with some of the cast, so I thought I would give it a try.

Not only was the film filled with comedy, but you also get to experience the inner workings of family relationships, romance and drama.  The cast Campbell chose, most of them known for smaller roles in their earlier works, created an atmosphere that allowed their chemistry to build.  From the relationship of Walter (West) and his father’s family, to the dynamic he had with Ellie (Greene), it was easy to fall in love with him.

The best way to describe the movie would be to come up with my own analogy.  Walter is searching though his fathers history like someone would search for the past in an antique mall.  His search allowed him to understand his father, build relationships with family and fall in love; just like one can be prosperous if the “right” antique is found.

Performances

From the beginning of the movie, it seems like Walter just doesn’t know how to fit into his fathers world.  What he thought he knew of him wasn’t who he was at all. Things seem to change after he meets the motley crew of the antique mall world. He just doesn’t know what to make of them at first, but as the film goes on, his interactions with them make him think more about who he is as a person.

Both West and Greene gave great performances that showed a range of acting capabilities.  You see this mostly when they are dealing with each other, from their first interaction to their last.  Most comedic performance is almost a tie between Delaney (Gladis), Dolores Jr (Watkins) and Jimmy Lee (Gordy).  Their quips had me laughing throughout the entire movie.  Add in the lively Blundale (Scott) and his “Stepfather”  Dewey Ray (Hogan) who round up the antique crew, and you have a great cast.

Despite the slow start to the movie where I wasn’t really sure what was going to happen, I would recommend this movie to anyone that has a spare 93 minutes and wants to enjoy a few laughs.
