To Remake or Not to Remake, That is the Question

Is it just me or has there been a multitude of remakes coming out of Hollywood in the past few years? The latest being the updated version of Dirty Dancing, which so far has not been a hit on social media.

It seems as though there isn’t a lot of creativity anymore. If there is, it is in the form of a superhero film or an Independent movie. As a follower of Independent Films, that doesn’t bother me too much; except NOTHING gets screened in my neck of the boonies. And that’s the case for most people. This makes it hard for the Independents to make money, hence less press and less promo. It seems to just be a circle.

With that being said, I think that is why we are seeing so many films being redone to fit todays viewers.  So if we were to sit down and really look at movies past, what would we consider to be the movies that would be on the remake block and the ones that should never be considered? As you can see from above, Dirty Dancing is NOT one of them. Add to that list the rumor that they are remaking Overboard and my fangirl nostrils are flaring.  For a child of the 80’s, it is hard to see a “classic” for us already being remade, especially when there was nothing wrong with the original.  Just as if anyone were to try to remake any of the John Hughes movies, I think that fandom would be in major uproar.

So to stop the babbling, here are our top 5 picks for movies that should NEVER be remade (in no order):

  1. Ferris Buellers Day Off – Yes I know it’s John Hughes, but it was my favorite of the bunch! Matthew Broderick made Ferris and I just can’t see how anyone can replace Alan Ruck as Cameron.
  2. The Goonies
  3. The Godfather – Just no.  Marlon Brando and Al Pacino will never be replaced
  4. Home Alone – Macauley Culkin IS Kevin McCallister, no ifs ands or buts
  5. Top Gun – It’s just a classic, why would you want to?

(Others that made the list: Any of the Matrix movies, Any other John Hughes films, the X-Men franchise)

Top 5 pics of movies the should/could be remade that wouldn’t bother us here at FN (in no order):

  1.  Adventures in Babysitting – There hasn’t been another movie that compares to this movie and it could use an update (granted I don’t know how I’ll get over someone else playing Thor other than Vincent D’Onofrio).
  2. Gremlins – Special effects could really make this movie so much more
  3. ET – Yes I know, I know, it should not be remade but think of the special effects that are used today and it could make a great movie better (dependent on casting and keeping the story line).
  4. The Legend of Billie Jean – There is more that she can be accused of to make it relevant in today’s society
  5. Speed – Why? Why not?

The one pattern I can see on most of the possible remakes is technological advancement since the 80’s.  If they were to bring some films up to date, they could be so much more than they were.

So, do you agree or disagree with us?  Leave us a comment and let us know your picks!
