Now we’re getting somewhere in this week’s episode of Outsiders: Rubberneck

After a couple of episodes where it seemed like not a lot was happening, WGN America’s drama Outsiders finally had a sit-up-and-take-notice moment in Tuesday’s episode, “Rubberneck.”

Now what is deputy sheriff Wade Houghton going to do after his boss, the sheriff, got his head snapped off in a bear trap on Shay Mountain? It was a shocking moment, one that made me rewind a few times to make sure I saw what I thought I saw. Sure enough, the poor veteran cop lost his head and then it tumbled down the hillside, detached from his body.

In a way, this is good for sweaty Wade because now he won’t have the sheriff on his case about the Farrells. But ultimately it’s worse because now the Farrells are Wade’s problem directly. The reaction Wade gets when just even someone mentions the Farrells and now there will have to be more interaction, for the Sheriff to deal with should be fun and interesting to watch unfold.

Plots got more interesting among the Farrells, too, when Lady Ray woke from her coma. Now Big Foster has to worry about if/when she’ll squeal that he’s the one who put her in the coma in the first place.

“Who knows what kind of nonsense she may spew out of her big gourd,” Foster frets.

So was the decapitation a relief or a jump the shark moment? No matter what the reason for the “wake-up” call, the show is finally picking up the pace that some viewers were complaining that they weren’t seeing. I for one have been hooked since the pilot, knowing all the subplots and possibilities are endless and keep us entertained for years to come.
