 Killjoys Review Boondoggie.

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Season 3 episode 1 of “Killjoys”. Read at your own risk.

Tuesday nights on syfyuk just got a little more exciting again as Killjoys season 3 has returned to our screens.  Before the Killjoys Review Boondoggie here is a quick recap of what happened towards the end of last season.

So far on Killjoys

At the end of season 2 Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) and her crew found out about the green goo also known as the Hullen.  The Hullen is an ancient power and has taken over many people but also gives them the power to heal.  All those under its control or using its effects are called level 6’s.  We then learnt D’avin Jaqobis (Luke Macfarlane) was somehow immune due to his shady military past.  Khlyen, Dutch’s mentor and enemy, knows how to kill them but in doing so dies infecting all those from that source pool.  Khlyen had a daughter called Aneela (Hannah John-Kamen) who is Dutch’s Doppelganger and Aneela is Hullen.

We were introduced to Clara and her ace arm Alice and learned about Hack-mods; humans who have been modified with cybernetics and considered illegal.  We lost Pawter and it really affected Johnny (Aaron Ashmore) as well as us I might say and we were left with Johnny leaving with Clara to sort out his head and learn to deal.

Boondoggie

We open season 3 with Dutch walking on a rocky yet snowy looking planet and a loan flying machine behind her.  Her hair is blue and as always is rocking as she is made to kneel before the machine and its camera lens looking down on her.  As she whispers her supposedly last words to the camera the voice doesn’t understand and he asks her to repeat them.  D’avin then appears to surprise the guy and then gets into a little comedic fight accompanied by the awesome music we have come to love in Killjoys.

Dutch does an amazing flying spinny kick and destroys the machine and then we see Pree (Thom Allison), Alvis (Morgan Kelly) and Fancy (Sean Baek) running towards the big building that was hidden in a rocky wall.  Best line so far is Pree running shouting “This better be worth the chaffing!” as they all head into the building before the door shuts on them.

The Hullen are gone

It turns out that they were trying to infiltrate a Hullen facility but have arrived before they all left and are left with one lonely annoying guy that D’avin had a fight with.  It seems that the Hullen knew about how the Arkyn tree was poisoned and he explains not all Hullen are from the same tree. After a few words of Hullen bravado he blows up.

D’avin and Dutch join the RAC ship and are walking past a wall of the 437 RAC agents missing since the Arkyn Hullen tree was taken out.  This number includes Johnny who no one has seen since he left with Clara to deal with the loss of Pawter.  It turns out we have a new leader at the RAC. Well, sort of. The oversight committee are not happy with the vast number of agents gone missing and have taken control, upsetting the calm of those left and Dutch which we know isn’t a good thing.  As Dutch tries to leave she is confronted and then asked where Johnny could be and at this point I am wondering this also.

Johnny

So after all this so far we are missing our favourite boy and this is where we catch up with him.  We cut to him running around to some 70’s style music and then is caught in a dead-end but the weird thing is, he has a mod on him covering his eye.

Someone has a gun aimed at him and tells him that his mod is illegal and he has 3 options one of which is hurting poor Johnny.  Johnny explains he is only looking for his friend but the guy isn’t budging. Then Johnny almost sings “Found her!” just before the guy hits the deck from a power blast, but it isn’t Clara behind him and the girl shoots down Johnny as well.

After we have finally hit our jazzy credits we cut back to the girl with Clara’s arm Alice looking over Johnny and not in a good way. It turns out I panicked over nothing and he hasn’t got a mod. It was a fake one and he is looking for Clara since Alice started to transmit a beacon to Johnny.  The woman with Alice’s arm (who I will call Mod Girl until I know better) says she woke up with Alice and knows no more.  Johnny says with her help she can find Clara and in return he will help her to find out what she needs.

Turin is an ally

Dutch and D’avin walk into a bar and no this isn’t a joke, they meet up with Turin and start drinking shots as they explain how they are out for blood.  They hate the new chick in charge and think she is Hullen.  After a few words Turin is able to convince them that taking her out isn’t the way forward and that the 437 agents missing woke up and discovered they were being controlled by something alien and well they have run off to hide and figure things out.

Dutch shows Turin an image with info Johnny has been sending back and it shows that all the RAC stations he has passed are positioned near plasma pools and she knows they need to poison them.  Turin has come up with a new plan that will help them get what they need to start their war.  I’m starting to like Turin more and more now, he used to be the man you hated and this season so far is the opposite.

Veluvian steam baths

We find a young man is sitting in the steam baths with a spa mask covering his eyes and he seems to be either telling a story or a joke I’m not sure which as it’s not funny.  Slightly behind him are two bald men wearing only towels and I guess they are his muscle since Dutch takes them out easily.  Dutch takes the young man and we discover his name is Pippin Foster, as they try to exit the room we see a knife hit the wall. Dutch asks “Ewww where were you hiding that?” which is an excellent question since towels are not easy to hold things in if at all.

As Dutch fights off the two supposed body guards we now see D’avin standing outside the room on lookout. He tries to explain away the loud grunts of pain from inside the room as a new deep tissue therapy. Since he looks like a fitness instructor and could probably give most girls a workout the passers-by believe him.

Hologram messages

Meanwhile Johnny is talking with Dutch or possibly a message from Dutch when Mod Girl walks in and they start to discuss Clara and why Clara went to Rat City. It turns out he wanted to take on The Factory but couldn’t take Johnny down with her as they are against Basics (un-modded humans).  This is what led to her disappearance and Alice ending up with Mod Girl.

Mod girls asks if she can join them in taking down the factory once they find Clara and Johnny agrees and we can see Mod Girl smiling at that which in turn makes me smile.  She was reluctant at first but I can see she has warmed slightly to Johnny and having company in what she is going through and that makes me happy.

Pippin Foster

The young man who Dutch and D’avin kidnapped is sitting in Lucy and looks like he is gonna puke. He is panicking over what they are going to do and if they will send proof of life to his rich parents.  Dutch knows better and tells him they know the spoilt rich kid image is a façade and that he is a black market dealer called the ‘Mouth’. They need him to help them acquire a chemical beacon to help them attract the people they are after. So far they haven’t let him know it’s the Hullen they are after.

They explain that they need an outsider to do this job and he is the one with the skills. He tries to barter with them for money and more, but true to Dutch fashion she beautifully explains no and we again are reminded how awesome she is.

Rat City

Johnny and Mod Girl (Tommie-Amber Pirie) are walking down a street and Johnny is wondering why no one is attacking them for their Mods.  Mod girl explains that Rat City is a neutral zone. Peace is expected and you have to tolerate those you wouldn’t normally. This is Rat City, people don’t exactly like each other but they tolerate each other and ignore their existence.

They enter in to a hack mod bar where only hack mods are allowed and since Johnny is wearing his fake mod he waltzes right in.  Mod girl walks through and asks for two beers and gets called a spec. Johnny wants to know what that means so Mod Girl explains the different types of hack mod.

A spec is someone who has a specific part ordered and are usually more complicated and useful than most.  Jumpers are those with modified legs and can run or jump better than others.  A Rip is a person with a claw like hand and can be enforcers or muscle.  Johnny with his eye piece would be an alloy or surveillance.

Johnny’s Comics

Dutch is sitting reading one of Johnny’s comics like she used to do with Johnny and what some of us would want to do of course.  D’avin mentions it and says they can talk about him if she wants to and all Dutch has to do is say the word and Johnny would be back in a heartbeat.  Dutch knows that and won’t ask him because she knows he would be back if she asked.

Lucy then lets them know that Pippin has completed his task and she relays the message word for word and it’s hilarious especially when you see D’avin and Dutch’s reaction to him calling Dutch hot.  They go to Pippin and find that the exchange will take place tonight and they must have cash, the exchange will be done by a black market dealer by the name of Sweet Jane.

Yoki

Johnny and Mod Girl are sitting in the bar talking to Clara’s friend Yoki. They ask if she has seen Clara at all and she says she hasn’t. She says that Rat City isn’t as safe as it used to be and then she leaves the bar.  Johnny wants to know more and follows her bumping into a guy as he leaves and his fake mod falls apart.

The mods are not happy that a Basic got in and broke their rules – No Basics in, but if they do get in, NO BASICS OUT.  They want to lynch him and are about to when mod girl starts firing off Alice to defend him and she comes up with a plan to save him – Mod him.  It’s a good plan but if they mess up his pretty face or those eyes there won’t be a corner of the J they can hide in!

Parallax Zone

The Parallax Zone looks like a real life version of Mario.  Tunnels appearing out of a desert and a random castle tower sticking out of the ground.  Pippin is walking with the crew in a tunnel until Dutch asks Fancy, Alvis and Pree to hang back.  They are useful as back up and out of sight incase needed.  Sweet Jane appears when lights come on sitting in a chair and says that if the money is as pretty as their back up this will go well.

Johnny lets out a manly yell as his hairy hand is waxed ready for him to be Modded up.

Mod girl explains that he is getting tagged and that will make him an honorary hack mod. Johnny has opted for something called a finger banger it sounds awful.  I hope it doesn’t hurt him. Whilst he is getting this done they insist that they look after Mod Girl and check her gear.

Back at the Parallax zone the exchange is about to take place.  Sweet Jane asks if Pippin vouches for the people he has brought in front of him and he does.

Dutch checks out the beacon and is about to exchange when the bald body guards of Pippins family turn up.  A stand-off happens between 3 sides and it seems they are outnumbered.  At least until Fancy turns up with some sort of motion detecting boomerang that stuns anything that moves.  Fancy wants to patent this cool tool that has helped Team Awesome Force to escape.

Finger Banger

A finger banger is technically named the Neurolinked Laser and that is what Johnny chose to have on his hand.

It’s a small laser that he controls with his mind that kinda looks like a mini lightsabre. Johnny looks so pleased with it he keeps grinning like a little kid at Christmas.  They ask the patrons of the hack mod bar if they know about Yoki.  They tell Mod girl and Johnny that Rat City isn’t as safe as they think and that Mods are disappearing.

As the crew leave the tunnels of the parallax zone, Pippin is going on about how key he was.  He goes on about if it wasn’t for him they couldn’t have done this.  Just then a craft illuminates them and arrests them to which they all mock cheer Pippin for his work.

Happy Johnny Sleepy Johnny

Johnny and his Mod Girl are laying in hammocks. Johnny keeps lighting up his Finger Banger and smiling like a kid.  Mod Girl looks over and shines a light from Alice and says “Mines Bigger”.  Johnny starts explaining to Mod Girl that when he first met Clara she saved his brother.  He then says that when he next met her she saved him but when asked he won’t explain why.  He discusses his fear of losing Clara and that would be another person that has left him.  Mod Girl then explains that she is worried that when they find Clara that she will not be needed.  They both then say good night and Johnny finds out that Mod Girl is called Ollie. Johnny lights up his finger mod again and smiles.

Border Control lockdown

A woman sits opposite Fancy and D’avin asking them questions they answer but not with what she wants to hear. Fancy mentions not having a warrant which annoys D’avin who then asks to be in a separate cell from him.  Next up is Alvis and Pree who are equally not giving the answers the woman wants.  Whilst this is going on Pippin and Dutch are in a cell and Dutch explains a bit about Johnny.  She calms Pippin by saying how she will get him out of any situation she puts him.  Soon the others come back and Dutch is taken.

Johnny is walking down a street alone and Ollie is watching from a window.  They are discussing how he is bait and sees the Jumper that he is to meet who runs off.  As Johnny pursues him Ollie is attacked in the room she was in.  The man who attacked is telling her to stop asking about Clara.  As they fight she is knocked back and loses Alice.  The man is about to shoot her when he is shot by Johnny before he can do so.  Johnny has the best timing in the quad in my opinion.

Johnny then uses his new mod and cuts into the face of the man who is dead.  He discovers that the Hullen goo is being used to help hold a second skin.  A second skin means this guy is wearing someone else’s face Ewww!  He turns to see that Ollie is now out cold and rushes to her side.

Back at the Lockdown Facility

Dutch is sitting in front of the Investigator and starts telling her a story about monsters and fighting them. Meanwhile Alvis, Pree, Fancy and D’avin are making a laser to cut a hole in the cell glass wall.  We now see that the story has made the investigator show her true nature as Hullen.

In the cell our boys are getting vials out from under fake skin on their bodies to attack the Hullen.  Dutch explains that the monsters in her story aren’t the Hullen that she is the monster.  The alarm starts to sound and she grabs a vial from the beacon they had brought.  Just like all of the team she takes out the Hullen.  After they can collect the now black goo and help take down the rest.  After they collect the black goo seeping from the Hullen they bomb the place and go on their merry way.

Life changes

Back on board Lucy, Pippin is reconsidering his place now that he knows of the Hullen.  He thinks he knows too much and could be killed for his trouble.  After a few words from Dutch saying he could be useful they let him go.

Dutch and D’avin meet up with Turin in the middle of nowhere as usual.  Turin shows them that when the Arkyn pool died something appeared.  He then uncloaks some ships – 36 Hullen ships to be exact – and says that they can’t activate them yet.

We finish with Dutch talking to Johnny but we know it’s a message Johnny sent previously.  We then flash to the real Johnny as he carries an unconscious Ollie through Rat city.  Next we see D’avin activating one of the Hullen ships and vanishing.  Dutch is still talking with the message and then replaying it again showing she really does miss him.

So after all that…

I can honestly say Johnny is really growing up.  He is not giving up on finding Clara and now with Ollie I think that he is over his head.  I am worried something bad may happen to our lovely tech nerd with a gun.

Dutch is missing Johnny (don’t blame her) and she is determined to get her war.  She doesn’t care who will get in her way as the Hullen needs to be exterminated.

D’avin is a whole different ball game – we think we know what he is and then Boom something else happens.  Where has he gone and what will he do with that ship.

I am so happy Killjoys is back on our box again.  I must say I have laughed so hard and enjoyed every minute of it.  Like me I bet you can’t wait to see what happens this season.  So make sure you tune in to SyFyUK, Tuesdays at 9.
