Is the Star Trek television universe set for expansion?

The answer is YES!! The Star Trek universe is set for a massive expansion, with several new series in the works under the supervision of Alex Kurtzman. It wasn’t that long ago that it seemed that the Star Trek universe was dead on television since the cancellation of Enterprise in 2005. So read on for the possibility of Star Trek television.

Star Trek – Discovery ended all of that in 2017. Produced primarily for the CBS streaming service, CBS All Access, Discovery revived Star Trek in a MASSIVE way!

Season 2 of Discovery is already in the pipeline, with Alex Kurtzman taking over as showrunner and there is rumour that we will see a younger version of Spock.

Now, CBS plans to take their Trek enterprise to warp speed, and they’ve designated Kurtzman as their official captain. Variety reports that Kurtzman has inked a new 5 year deal with CBS and will oversee multiple new Trek-related series. And we already have details about what some of these might be.

Star Trek television

The list of potential shows includes :

  • A series set at Starfleet Academy from Gossip Girl creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. This sounds like it could have more youth appeal, perhaps targeted at a more CW-type audience.
  • A limited series whose plot details are currently under lock and key. May Picard’s retirement? There is a possibility of Patrick Stewart returning to reprise his role of Jean-Luc Picard. In fact Stewart  recently teased about his return.

Star Trek television

  • A limited series based around the Wrath of Khan story. One possibility would be a prequel exploring the origins of Khan, the genetically engineered super-being. Alternatively they could explore what happened to Khan during their exiled years.
  • An animated series whose plot details are also kept under wraps. I’m thinking Next Gen christmas party??

I’m sure the possible return of the greatest Starfleet captain ever could be one more exciting possibility, but we will have to see how Captain Kurtzman moves the Enterprise forward.

Let us know what you think about Star Trek television…….live long and prosper.
