Good Time: North American Premiere

Good Time, starring Robert Pattinson and directed by brothers Josh and Benny Safdie, made its North American debut on July 27th in Montreal at the Fantasia Film Festival.  Based on the script by Josh and Ronald Bronstein,  Elara Pictures’ Sebastian Bear-McClard and Oscar Boyson were producers on the film.

So far the worldwide reviews have been nothing short of amazing, so when the opportunity presented itself for me to travel over the border to see it, I couldn’t pass it up.  I can say I wasn’t disappointed with the movie.  However, I  feel a little disheartened with my experience.  Let me make it clear one more time: The disappointment has NOTHING to do with the directing or the acting.  My issue was with the venue itself.  The first 30 minutes of the movie was played at such a high volume that I had to plug my ears at some points, which left me not being able to concentrate on the movie itself.  So now that my complaint is out of the way, it’s time to get to the good stuff.

A little background on the movie for those that don’t know what it’s about: Robert Pattinson portrays Connie Nikas, a psychopath, who is desperately trying to find a way to get his brother Nick Nikas (Benny Safdie), a special needs person, out of jail before something can happen to him.

Superb Acting

Pattinson once again showed how he can change and adapt to make his character his own.  Totally blending into the background in NYC, he was so far in character even the biggest of his fans would not recognize him.  His acting was spot on once again. For years, he has lived in the spotlight of being part of a young adult franchise.  As a fan of his, it has been hard to see when people haven’t taken him seriously because of his roles in younger years.  It is so amazing to see critics and directors finally seeing the potential that he has.  Now, I have heard that there has been Oscar talk for this role.  Do I see it?  Well, I’m not paid to see it and I don’t know if it was quite at that point, BUT I also don’t know what they use as a checklist for contenders.  But I will say I was not disappointed with his performance and was once again blown away by his skills.

I don’t know if I’m going to be in the minority when I say this, but standout star of the film, for the time he was in it, would go to Benny Safdie.  His portrayal of Nick Nikas was hands down spectacular.  From the first scene in the movie to the very last scene he made my mouth drop.  His depiction of a man with special needs was so spot on that you don’t even realize he was acting.  I throughly enjoyed watching him on-screen.

Newcomer Tahliah Webster (Crystal)  joined in the comedy of errors that Pattinson found himself on.  For being young and new to the scene, she brought a little comedic relief to the movie.

Another newbie to me, but not to the Safdie Brothers was Buddy Duress.  I have to say, the casting of him as Ray was another spot on casting job.  He, along with Webster, just clicked with Pattinson to make the movie that much more enjoyable.

I give my thumbs up to everyone involved with the movie, from the directors and actors to the producers and production company, casting.  You name it and they hit it out of the park with this movie.

So for those that are able to see it, it hits theaters in the US on August 11th (limited release).  If you aren’t as lucky to see it at theaters, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed when you finally do get to see it on home release.
