Game of Thrones Recap: ‘The Gift’

Sunday night’s Game of Thrones was just EPIC! Two beloved characters finally meet, there’s another death, Sam has sex, and we get to witness a very surprising change of events for the Queen Mother.

It is at Castle Black where Maester Aemon takes his final breath. Both Sam and Gilly are by his side, as he calls out to his brother Aegon. Maester Aemon’s final words are, “I dreamed I was old.” As the men of the Night’s Watch pay their respects, its pretty evident that Sam had better watch his back. Now with Jon gone and Maester Aemon deceased, it doesn’t put Sam in a favorable position.

Gilly gets cornered by a few of the men at Castle Black, and attempts to fight them off, until Sam comes to her rescue. But Sam ends up taking quite a beating. I admit, it didn’t look too good for him until Jon’s direwolf Ghost appears and scares them off. Gilly runs over to Sam, to tend to his wounds. She ends up tending to more than just his wounds though. Gilly gently climbs on top of them, and sweetly takes his virginity. Way to go Sam!

The last time we saw Sansa, was during that very controversial wedding night scene with Ramsey, and apparently her situation has not improved in the slightest. She’s covered in bruises, and in a desperate plea to Theon, begs him to light a candle in the tower, since she was told that she still has friends in the North. Theon refuses at first, but Sansa seems to think she convinced him to help her, and I actually thought, maybe he can redeem himself. Not so much! He takes the candle straight to Ramsey. We all know that Theon has some missing body parts and it’s quite evident that his back bone is among those missing!

Ramsey, being all crazy and such, summons Sansa to join him in a walk, and he’s so elated to show her the old woman who told Sansa that she still has friends in Winterfell. Unfortunately, in true Ramsey style, the old woman is hanging and her body has been flayed. For Sansa to survive, she needs to be a more craftier, and way more careful.

Last week in Dorne, Jaime and Bronn made their attempt to reach Myrcella to bring her back to King’s Landing. Their rescue attempt was cut short, when the late Prince Oberyn’s daughters show up, and the fighting begins. Both sides get caught by Prince Doran’s soldiers, but not before Bronn’s arm get’s nicked. We all know that Prince Oberyn used to poison his blades when he fought, so it’s no surprise his daughters wouldn’t do the same.

After being captured, Myrcella pays a visit to her uncle/father Jaime. She refuses to go back to King’s Landing, after all she has a Dornish boyfriend and Dorne has been her home for many years now. Looks like Jaime has a big problem on his hands. As does Bronn who slowly realizes that he’s been poisoned. In the cell across from Bronn are the Sand Snakes, and Tyene amuses herself by disrobing herself in front of Bronn. Conveniently, she has the antidote to the poison, and ends up tossing it to him.

In Meereen, Daario tries to convince Dany to marry him rather than Hizdahr. But that doesn’t quite make sense for Daenerys. After her rejection of his offer of marriage, he advises her to kill all the former slave masters. Daario goes on to say, “all rulers are either butchers or meat.”

Since allowing to open the fighting pits, Dany tours one of outlying fighting pits, in hopes to show respect for the local tradition. It just so happens that Jorah and Tyrion are at the same pit. The matches begin among the slaves that are not supposed to be slaves, and Dany is disgusted by the senseless violence. Just as she had enough, Jorah comes running out, helmet and all, looking like a gladiator. He quickly defeats everyone, and stands before Dany and removes his helmet. Dany, in shock, yells for him to be removed. As a last-ditch attempt to get her attention, he ells out that he has a gift for her. A gift indeed, then Tyrion comes running out, and professes that he is in fact the gift. Not knowing who Tyrion is, he introduces himself. This is the moment GoT fans have been waiting for!!! It’s been a long time coming, seeing these two beloved characters finally come face-to-face. Now that is a gift!

There wasn’t just one gift in this episode, but fans got another as we watched the fallout of all of Cersei’s plotting and conniving come to a head. Her biggest mistake was allowing the High Sparrow to have so much power. In a very interesting meeting between Littlefinger and Lady Olenna, we come to find out that it was Littlefinger that offered up Loras’s lover and conveniently letting Lady Olenna know that Brother Lancel  will do the same to Cersei. In the end of the episode, a very smug Cersei visits Margaery in her prison cell. She’s lucky Margaery didn’t try to claw her eyes out, as she screams at Cersei to get out. As she exits the prison cell, she sees the High Sparrow, and not before long he reveals to Cersei that Brother Lanel has told him a great many things about her. Cersei’s usual smug face fell for just a moment when she realizes what this means. Such things that could only have one outcome, Cersei being locked up in the same dungeon she set up for the Tyrells. There’s something to be said about karma.
