Game of Thrones Recap: ‘Sons of the Harpy’

At the end of last week’s episode, Tyrion is hauled away by none other than Jorah Mormont. Tyrion is convinced that he is now headed back to Westeros to face his sister Cersei. Keep in mind there is a rather large price on his head. Jorah knocks out a fisherman, steals his boat, but in good faith throws a few coins on his unconscious body. A very kind gesture, right! In the boat, Tyrion is still gagged, so for utter annoyance value, he starts humming a rendition of “The Rains of Castamere.” Nice touch! With that Jorah removes the gag, and at which point Tryion figures out who he is in mere seconds, that he spied on Dany, and has now been cast away by the Mother of Dragons. Jorah thought best to knock him out, as he did the fisherman. So it’s on to Meereen for this very odd pairing.

On another ship, headed for Dorne is Jaime and Bronn, in hopes to retrieve Princess Myrcella. AKA, Jaime’s daughter not his niece, as he likes to refer to her, even though Bronn knows he is lying. Not long after arriving on the beautiful beaches of Dorne, these two find themselves in trouble. With not way to hide from the soldiers, nor talk their way out of a potential bloody mess, they have no choice but to fight. Bronn, took the bulk of the soldiers down pretty easily, leaving Jaime to a defend himself with his one hand. Just when it didn’t look too good for Jaime, he catches the blade of his opponents sword in his golden hand. Lucky for that golden hand, it saved his life, but will he be able to stop Ellaria and Oberyn’s bastard children, the Sand Snakes. This is our first introduction to Oberyn’s fierce daughters, and they rally with Ellaria for revenge for their father’s untimely death.

Back at King’s Landing Cersei is causing all kinds of havoc. Granting the High Sparrow title as High Septon and giving him power over the Faith Militant, his very own private army, is most likely going to be more damaging than good to Cersei, as this storyline develops. The Faith Militant is roaming the streets of Kings Landing dishing out holy justice, and raiding Littlefinger’s brothel. They end up arresting Margaery’s brother Loras for breaking “the laws of gods and men.” A very upset Margaery confronts the King, but quite honestly, Tommen is too young, and inexperienced to rule as king. He cowers in front of the High Sparrow army, and does nothing. One thing is for certain, the honeymoon appears over for these two, as Margaery leaves to be with her family.

At Castle Black there is a very touching moment between Stannis and his daughter, who had been infected by the greyscale. Stannis tells her a very touching story of how he refused to cast her away when she was a baby, and sent to the bloody stone men. His love for his daughter has been evident throughout, and since the season has started, the mention of greyscale has been brought up several times now. Not sure what the meaning behind it is, but on Game of Thrones, everything has meaning.

So while Stannis is comforting his daughter, Melisandre is trying to put the moves on Jon Snow. And she is also trying to convince him to march with her and Stannis to Winterfell. But the ever faithful Jon, who is still in love with the deceased Ygritte declines her naked body. Thank goodness for his morality, we do not need any more shadow babies.

Speaking of Winterfell, Sansa is in her family crypts, specifically in front of her beautiful aunt Lyanna’s statue. And just like a serpent, Littlefinger slithers in. For the first time since season one, we hear about Lyanna and one of the events leading up to Robert’s Rebellion, the one where Rheagar Targaryen declared Lyanna the Queen of Love and Beauty. But such talk wasn’t the reason Littlefinger was looking for Sansa, he needed to say his good-byes before he left for Kings Landing by request from Cersei. Sansa, nervous about being left alone, is reassured that everything will be fine and we are reminded that she had an excellent teacher. Ok, so we know he’s taught her how to play the role, and he’s been a constant for her, but did he have to kiss her goodbye like that. He is just so creepy. And for the record, I think he knows a little more than he is letting on about Prince Rheagar and Lyanna.

Sansa wasn’t the only one hearing about tales of the infamous Prince Rheagar. In Meereen, Barristan Selmy and Dany are chatting about her older brother as well. Barristan Selmy regales Dany with stories about how Rheagar used to hang out on the streets of King’s Landing and serenade the people. With all this talk of Prince Rheagar, we’re interested to hear more about him. Unfortunately, the memories that Barristan Selmy has, ends there. A deadly fight endues on the streets of Meereen between the Sons of the Harpy and the Second Sons and Unsullied. It’s an epic fight scene, and it seems like the Unsullied are outnumbered. In the fight is our beloved Grey Worm, and he does get injured and it doesn’t look too good, but he keeps fighting and fighting. Barristan the Bold joins the fight too and he is taking them down left and right, and then the unthinkable, he goes down. As he does down, Grey Worm passes out next to him. Quite sure Barristan is no longer, but Grey Worm’s fate is to be determined.
