Emmy Nominations 2017 – Biggest Snubs and Surprises
The nominations for the 2017 Emmys were announced in LA on July 13th by Anna Chlumsky (Veep) and Shemar Moore (SWAT, Criminal Minds). As always there were a few surprises in the nominations and a few names were left out. We thought we’d take a look at the biggest Snubs and Surprises of this year’s nominations.
Surprises
Shannon Purser
Justice for Barb! Many were surprised to see the Stranger Things actress’ name on the ballot for the outstanding guest actress in a drama series, as she only appeared in four out of eight episodes of the hit Netflix series’ first season.
Westworld
HBO’s critically-acclaimed sci-fi drama tied with Saturday Night Live to lead the pack with 22 nominations across a range of categories.
Samira Wiley
While the actress’ nomination for the Handmaid’s Tale is well deserved, many fans believed that she would receive a nod for her final performance in Orange Is the New Black’s season 4 instead.
Martha Stewart & Snoop Dogg
The unlikely duo’s hilarious dynamic earned their VH1 show, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, a nomination in the outstanding host for a reality or reality-competition program category. If they take home the statue, the rapper will have earned an Emmy before he earns a Grammy.
Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl Performance
Maybe it was that stadium dive? The pop star’s highly choreographed performance earned an outstanding production design for variety, nonfiction, event or award special nomination.
Jane Fonda
For the previous 2 years, Lily Tomlin earned best comedic actress nominations for her role in the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, but her co-star did not. This year Fonda got one too.
Pamela Adlon
After winning an Emmy for voicing Bobby Hill on King of the Hill more than a decade ago, Adlon earned a best actress in a comedy series nomination this year for her starring role in FX’s Better Things. She was previously nominated for her work on Louie
Genius
The National Geographic project earned 10 nominations, including a best lead actor in a limited series or movie nod for Geoffrey Rush, who plays Albert Einstein
Snubs
Mandy Moore
Though hit NBC drama This Is Us scored 11 nominations, Moore was overlooked for her powerful, time-bending role as a mother and grandmother. Moore’s costars Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz and Ron Cephas Jones earned acting nods for their work on the series.
Gilmore Girls
Despite fan hysteria over the series’ four-episode revival on Netflix, Stars Hollow’s residents got no love from the Academy. Fans were especially shocked that Lauren Graham didn’t earn a nod. Many felt she was overlooked at the annual ceremony during the original series’ seven-year run.
Oprah
Some expected Oprah to earn a nomination for her role as Deborah Lacks in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. She also also executive-produced the HBO movie. While the project was nominated in the outstanding television movie category, Oprah did not get an acting nod.
The Americans
Fans rejoiced when the FX series earned its first nomination for best drama series in 2016, but the Cold War tale was shut out of the best drama category this year. Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell earned best actor and actress nominations for their roles. The show also gained a nomination in the writing category.
The Leftovers
The HBO series gained critical acclaim prior to its series finale in June. Consequently fans were shocked that the show, and Carrie Coon’s notable performance, were excluded from the nomination list. The only recognition for the series came from Ann Dowd’s nomination for outstanding guest actress in a drama series.
Girls
Lena Dunham’s show was Emmy-nominated in its first three seasons, however the fan-favourite series did not receive recognition from the Academy for its final episodes.
Jimmy Fallon
The Tonight Show host was left off the ballot in the variety talk series category. Competitors Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Late Late Show With James Corden and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert did make the cut.
Rami Malek
The star of Mr. Robot on USA, Malek earned the Emmy for best actor in a drama series earlier this year, and yet on Thursday morning, his name was not among the nominees.
Orange is the New Black
While Uzo Aduba and Laverne Cox were nominated in the supporting and guest actress categories for the Netflix drama, the rest of the cast were overlooked.
HBO Actresses
While Julia Louis-Dreyfus earned her 6th consecutive nomination for best actress in a comedy series for HBO’s Veep, other actresses who helm shows on the network were left out. Issa Rae (Insecure) and Sarah Jessica Parker (Divorce) were thought to be possibilities for the best actress category, but neither received a nomination.
Christina Baranski
Ken Tucker told ABC news that a nomination for Baranski could indicate whether CBS’s gamble at making The Good Fight an online-only show paid off. The show received only one nomination on Thursday, for the best original main title theme music
The 2017 Emmy Awards will air on CBS Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 8 p.m. ET
