Doug Jones to star in Nosferatu Remake

According to various reports, filming has begun on a remake of FW Murnau’s 1922 classic, Nosferatu, with Doug Jones in the title role. Nosferatu was intended as an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula but the filmmakers were unable to obtain the rights so elements were changed (Vampire became Nosferatu, Count Dracula became Count Orlock) but the basic story remained. The Nosferatu remake is currently slated for a release at Halloween this year.

The above picture shows the original Count Orlock, Max Shreck. Those who are familiar with Doug Jones work will know he is not averse to playing heavily made up characters. Famous for roles such as Abe Sapien in Hellboy, the Silver Surfer in the Fantastic Four movie or the creepy Ice Cream guy in the movie Legion. You might not recognise him if you saw him in the street, but the chances are you’ve seen him in more than one movie or TV show. He may have haunted your dreams as the lead Gentleman from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode Hush, or maybe you were a fan of his softly spoken Alien warrior Cochise in Falling Skies. So we thought we’d give you an idea…

Yep, that’s Doug, and I can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve as Count Orlock. According to reports, director David Lee Fisher is “creating a remix of the original film with a mixture of live-action combined with colorized digital backgrounds recreated from the original film.” This sounds fascinating, something a bit different from the standard reboot fare out there these days. Hopefully it will bring a new audience to the original silent film.

The movie also stars his Falling Skies castmate Sarah Carter as Ellen, the wife of the estate agent that Orlock is in love with, and Emrhys Cooper (Mamma Mia) as her husband Thomas Hutter.
