Clare’s Comics Catalogue – Transfer Review

Transfer is the latest offering from apparent comic dynamo Matt Garvey (seriously, the guy just doesn’t seem to slow down!). I met Matt at MCM London earlier this year and picked up issues 1&2 of his other two series, Cordelia Swift and Chunks. I loved both the steampunk PI kick-assery of Swift and the debauched punk rock nonsense of Chunks, so when Matt sent me a copy of the first issue of Transfer I was very excited.

Transfer is a non-stop 28 page ride that does not apply the brakes at all except for when the plane lands at the start! Our star is Steve, he’s a courier you see but instead of transporting goods he transports people. In his head. Think kinda like Johnny Mnemonic only not the dreadful Keanu Reeves movie.

In the future version of the world where Matt sets his story it’s no longer possible for nasty, wanted felon types to fake their deaths, get plastic surgery and return. Instead they fake their deaths, get downloaded into a courier’s head for a bit and then transferred into a new host body. This circumvents advanced DNA tech and allows them to get on with their lives of crime.

But the twist comes pretty hard and fast, cos you see when you deal with nasty crime boss types, they generally don’t like people knowing what they are up to. The guy that Steve is “transferring” is definitely one of those types and things go south very quickly.

I love the idea of the transfer tech, although I’m less in love with the idea of having another person rattling around inside my head. There’s enough nonsense going on in there already without someone else contributing.

Issue one ends on a bombshell that opens up so very many possibilities for future issues and a serious need for some revenge. It feels like this series is going to leave a high body count and a trail of destruction in its wake and I am really excited to see it.

You can pick up issue one from Matt’s web store here or, if you’re lucky enough to live near Forbidden Planet in either Dublin or Glasgow, you can pop in and grab the extremely sexy variant cover from there.

About author(s)

Clare Hemsworth

Hey, I'm Clare, aka Ciara or C. My current fandoms are RWBY and The Last Kingdom along with a bunch of other stuff I tend to let build up and then binge! I'm a keen, albeit amateur, cosplayer and love attending cons in various cosplays. I'm also the resident comic book girl around these parts, especially small press comics, so if you've got an indie book you want reviewed, I'm your gal! When I'm not doing the fangirl thing I am a keen long-distance hiker, having completed Te Araroa in New Zealand and The Pacific Crest Trail on the West Coast of the US.
