Clare’s Comics Catalogue – Horrere Halloween Special

Yes, I know, Halloween was almost a week ago, and for that I must begin with an apology to those mad geniuses over at Madius Comics. Sorry guys! I’ve had this one on the back burner since the lovely Rob sent it my way. Pretty sure he’s withholding my Griff Gristle KS pack as payback though. Anyway, enough of this. We’re here because Madius have released the very fabulous Horrere Halloween special.

Horrere Halloween Special

Available now in digital format here, the Horrere Halloween Special contains 3 new bone chilling tales for the bargain price of just £1.50!

The first featured story is from the debuting Mat Pringle, entitled OCTOPUS & RAVEN. An exploration of life, death and rebirth told through stunning visuals that are guaranteed to haunt you long after you finish reading. Hold your breath! The water is deep! The cycle continues.

Secondly, there’s the return of Horrere favourite, the Professor! Since surviving his close brush with The Aufhocker in issue one, something new has caught the Professor’s professional and personal curiosity and lead him to the house of an old friend. A trinket has caused his friend some considerable alarm and the Professor’s cryptographic and linguistic talents have been requested to try and get to the bottom of the mystery…BEFORE THE MOON RISES FULL! From writers Michael Sambrook and Rob Jones and featuring art from the Horrere debuting Joe Becci comes a darkly comic tale of dusty Victorian manors and even dustier artifacts. THE QUIESCENT!

Then finally, rounding out the issue, comes a chilling tale of finding things that should remain hidden, seeing things that should remain unseen and opening doors that are best left firmly closed. A group of children find a strange note calling them to the woods, a couple of 19th Century bandits find a mysterious monolith, and the ancient presence uniting these events will drag you headfirst into a story that bends time, space and your expectations! You will be left shuddering with fright. Written by Michael Sambrook and Rob Jones and featuring art from the incredible Alexa Renée comes DO YOU WANT TO SEE?

I think my favourite of the three was the final tale, Do You Want To See, although all three are great. Now I know what you’re thinking… “Clare, it’s Madius, and it’s horror… but are there tentacles?” Of COURSE there are tentacles!

The Octopus and The Raven

The Octopus and The Raven comes from the tradition of Raven Tales, the traditional creation stories of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest.

See… tentacles!

A visual retelling of a Nootka tribal story, this one left me unsettled and a little puzzled. Not to mention wanting to find out more about these type of stories! I rate any piece that leaves me wanting to do research pretty highly! A great debut from Mat Pringle.

The Quiescent

This Victorian jaunt brings the horror in true Madius fashion. By which I mean unintelligible gibbering, heavy gothic overtones and… yep… tentacles

Darkly comic in tone, this one is less likely to have you leave the light on before bed, but still well worth reading!

Do You Want To See

Alexa Renee breathes life into this story. Unfolding over two separate but linked timelines, I found Do You Want To See the creepiest of the three.

Proving that not everything you read is good for you, this is one chilling little tale.

The Horrere Halloween Special is out now.

If digital isn’t your bag (baby) then you can pick up physical copies of Horrere 1 and 2 here.

Clare Hemsworth

Hey, I'm Clare, aka Ciara or C. My current fandoms are RWBY and The Last Kingdom along with a bunch of other stuff I tend to let build up and then binge! I'm a keen, albeit amateur, cosplayer and love attending cons in various cosplays. I'm also the resident comic book girl around these parts, especially small press comics, so if you've got an indie book you want reviewed, I'm your gal! When I'm not doing the fangirl thing I am a keen long-distance hiker, having completed Te Araroa in New Zealand and The Pacific Crest Trail on the West Coast of the US.
