Clare’s Comics Catalogue – Griff Gristle: The Siren’s Song

If you keep a weather eye on my personal twitter you might have seen me get a tad excited last week when I received something for review. (I swear that’s the only nautical reference). Once again the Technodoctors at Madius Comics are trying to bankrupt me but I’ve been waiting for this one so I don’t mind too much. The sequel to one of my favourite titles from last year is on its way. The kickstarter for Griff Gristle: The Siren’s Song is live RIGHT NOW!

If you’re new to the world of the Crusty Fisher Punk you might want to check out my review of the first issue here. The Siren’s Song picks up on the adventures of Griff and his feisty sidekick Justine. They are investigating a magical occurrence on a cruise ship that shows signs of being connected to Griff’s mysterious past. There’s also a small matter of an assassin on their tails who seems thoroughly intent on putting the spear wielding mystic and his accomplice out of action. Not that Griff is likely to let that stop him.

Once again Rory Donald has brought to life the twisted imaginations of writing duo Rob Jones and Michael Sambrook. And twisted it is. Or at least the tentacles are. And the humour. I actually spat tea all over my keyboard on my first read through. Twice. Griff really does have a very salty sense of humour. Okay, that’s it, I promise I’m done with sea related puns.

The story races along at quite a clip, and ends on, well, quite the cliffhanger. There’s also a 7-page bonus story at the end, happening concurrent to the main Griff plot, that sheds some light on the Children of the Waves.

The Kickstarter

As I said before, the kickstarter is live already. Unlike other Madius kickstarters this one is ONLY running for two weeks. Why? Because the book is already written, drawn, coloured and edited and just needs to be printed. Two weeks on the KS means that the book will be ready for official launch at the Thought Bubble Sequential Arts festival in Leeds on September 23rd/24th.

The reward tiers are, as I’ve come to expect from Madius, stuffed to the gunwhales (okay, I lied about the sea puns) with goodies. There are t-shirts, enamel pin badges, tarot cards and original art up for grabs. Some of these, especially the original art tiers, are very limited so you need to get in there FAST! I will most certainly be grabbing the tier that includes the t-shirt, pin badge and tarot cards. Those are designed by the brilliant Rory Donald so I expect them to be nothing less than awesome. The target is a paltry £2000, most of which goes towards production costs and paying the artist. Anything left over will go on towards funding the further adventures of the Crusty Fisher Punk.

And come on, who doesn’t want more tentacles? See you on the high seas!

Hey, I'm Clare, aka Ciara or C. My current fandoms are RWBY and The Last Kingdom along with a bunch of other stuff I tend to let build up and then binge! I'm a keen, albeit amateur, cosplayer and love attending cons in various cosplays. I'm also the resident comic book girl around these parts, especially small press comics, so if you've got an indie book you want reviewed, I'm your gal! When I'm not doing the fangirl thing I am a keen long-distance hiker, having completed Te Araroa in New Zealand and The Pacific Crest Trail on the West Coast of the US.
